HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Hampden-Sydney College senior right-hander and team captain
Sterling Austin (Petersburg) has been named the
Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Baseball Pitcher of the Week for the period February 16-22. Sterling started on the mound against Muskingum (OH) University in the home opener on Feb. 20 and pitched the first 6.2 shutout innings, yielding just two hits with a career-high 10 strikeouts and only one walk allowed. He retired the Fighting Muskies in order in the third, fifth and sixth innings with two strikeouts each in the third, fifth, sixth and seventh innings. Austin's outstanding effort helped the Tigers to an 8-0 win on Yank Bernier Field at the Ty Cobb Ballpark – Wurdeman Stadium.
Sterling has made two pitching appearances this season, starting both games, with a record of 1-0 and a 2.53 ERA through 10.2 innings pitched with 12 strikeouts and only two walks allowed. He is tied for fourth in the ODAC in fewest walks allowed, fifth in strikeouts, tied for fifth in opponent batting average (.200) and tied for eighth in innings pitched.
H-SC (4-1) will play again at non-conference opponent William Peace University on Wednesday, Feb. 25, at the USA Baseball National Training Complex, Field 4, in Cary, North Carolina.
