Third road game of the season for the Tigers marks the beginning of 2026 ODAC competition

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- (RV)Hampden-Sydney College plays on the road for the third time already this season at Shenandoah University in its first Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) football game this fall on Saturday, October 3, at 1 p.m. in Winchester. The Tigers, receiving votes in the latest AFCA D3 Coaches Poll, are 2-1 overall following a wild 43-41 non-conference road win at the University of New England on September 19 in Biddeford, Maine. SU is also 2-1 overall following a high-scoring 48-41 non-conference road loss at Case Western Reserve University on Sept. 19 in Cleveland, Ohio. The game can be heard locally on WVHL Radio, Kickin' Country 92.9 FM, and will also be available worldwide on the Internet at wvhl.net or via the TuneIn Radio App, pregame airing at 12:30 p.m., while available to watch on FloCollege.

At UNE, H-SC trailed 14-12 after one quarter and 28-22 at halftime, but scored 14 unanswered points in the third quarter to lead 36-28 after three quarters en route to the come-from-behind triumph, getting a school-record 316 yards rushing by senior running back Terry Hicks (Clayton, NC). SU trailed 20-0 after one quarter at CWRU, 34-20 at halftime and 34-27 after three quarters en route to the setback despite 414 yards passing by Mekhi Brown.

Head Coach Vince Luvara
H-SC is led by the third-year head coach who took over the program on December 7, 2023. The former defensive coordinator at Washington & Jefferson (PA) College from 2016-23, Luvara is the 29th head coach in the 131-year history of the storied Hampden-Sydney program. The Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania native is no stranger to NCAA Division III, having played four years at Allegheny (PA) College and coached one year at Allegheny and two years at Misericordia (PA) University—each school members of Division III. Luvara is 14-9 at the College.

The Series
H-SC leads the overall series against SU at 9-5, including a 42-7 home win last Sept. 20, 2025 on Fulton Field at Lewis C. Everett Stadium. Terry Hicks had a season-high 192 yards rushing and a career-high three touchdowns, as the Tigers had a school-record 443 yards rushing against the Hornets. H-SC is 4-3 on the road at SU, including a 35-7 loss on November 9, 2024, its most recent visit to Winchester. The Hornets had 387 yards rushing against the Tigers in that game.

NCAA Team Stat Rankings (Top 25)
H-SC ranks 14th in NCAA Division III rushing offense (255.3) and 24th in red zone defense (.533), allowing points on eight of 15 opponent possessions inside the 20 yard line.

Record-Setting Game
Terry Hicks rushed for a career-high and school-record 316 yards on a career-high 36 attempts (8.8) and one touchdown at the University of New England (ME) on Sept. 19. He had 12 runs of 10 or more yards, including two 30-plus-yard runs. It's the highest single-game rushing total in Division III this season, the third-highest total in all NCAA Divisions this season, and the third-highest total in ODAC history. Jimmy Ferguson '79 owned the previous single-game record at the College for the past 49 years with his 226 yards rushing against Liberty Baptist in 1977 in a game that was played in Danville. Grayson Overstreet of Emory & Henry has the ODAC single-game record of 324 yards against Ferrum in 2019. Cephus Harris of Division II Davenport (MI) has the NCAA's top single-game this season with his 351 yards against Gannon (PA) on August 29, while DII's Connor Carver of Bemidji State (MN) rushed for 335 yards against Minot State (ND) on Sept. 26.

Scouting the Tigers
Junior quarterback Connor Creech (Winston-Salem, NC) has passed for 470 yards (44-70-3) and five touchdowns with three interceptions thrown in three games, and adds 104 yards rushing on 42 attempts and five touchdowns. He leads the ODAC in overall touchdowns, rushing touchdowns, points (30) and points per game (10.0), is fourth in total offense (574), total offense per game (191.3), passing touchdowns and completion percentage (62.9), and fifth in passing yards and passing efficiency (134.3). Connor ranks 17th in Division III rushing touchdowns.

Terry Hicks has rushed for 527 yards on 75 attempts (7.0) and one touchdown, adding five receptions for 22 yards receiving. He leads the ODAC in rushing yards, rushing yards per game (175.7), yards per carry (minimum 10 carries per game), all-purpose yards (549) and all-purpose yards per game (183.0), and is fifth in total offense (527) and total offense per game (175.7). Terry leads Division III in rushing yards per game, is fifth in rushing yards, ninth in all-purpose yards and 23rd in yards per carry. Sophomore running back Will Foley (Virginia Beach) has rushed for 110 yards on 16 attempts (6.9) and one touchdown, adding two receptions for 14 yards receiving. He is second in the ODAC in all-purpose yards (449) and all-purpose yards per game (149.7).

Senior wide receiver Tyler Hendley (Charlotte, NC) has 10 receptions for 164 yards receiving and two touchdowns. He is tied for fourth in the ODAC in receiving touchdowns, tied for sixth in receptions, eighth in receiving yards, tied for eighth in receptions per game (3.3) and ninth in receiving yards per game (54.7). Sophomore wide receiver Dario Benaglia (Frisco, TX) has seven receptions for 103 yards receiving and two touchdowns. He is also tied for fourth in the ODAC in receiving touchdowns. Senior wide receiver James Bishop (Jacksonville, FL) has five receptions for 49 yards receiving and one touchdown. Sophomore wide receiver Max Nitti (Appomattox) has five receptions for 46 yards receiving.

Junior linebacker Frank Brewer (Charlotte, NC) has 38 tackles, 18 solo, 4.5 for loss, one sack and one interception. He leads the ODAC in solo tackles, is tied for first in tackles for loss, second in tackles and tackles per game (12.7), and tied for fourth in interceptions. Frank is sixth in Division III tackles and 18th in solo tackles. Sophomore linebacker Gavin Gallavan (Richmond) has 35 tackles, nine solo, 0.5 for loss, 0.5 sacks and two quarterback hurries. He is third in the ODAC in tackles and tackles per game (11.7). Gavin is ninth in Division III tackles. Junior safety Mitch Ladamus (Fort Mill, SC) has 33 tackles, 15 solo, and 1.0 for loss. He is tied for fourth in the ODAC in tackles tackles per game (11.0), and tied for fifth in solo tackles. Mitch is 16th in Division III tackles. Sophomore safety Will Bostwick (Bluffton, SC) has 26 tackles, seven solo, and one forced fumble. He is tied for second in the ODAC in forced fumbles, ninth in tackles and 10th in tackles per game (8.7). Junior cornerback Parks Cromwell (Charlotte, NC) has 19 tackles, 15 solo, 1.0 for loss, one interception, four pass breakups and one quarterback hurry. He leads the ODAC in pass breakups, is second in passes defended (5), tied for fourth in interceptions and tied for fifth in solo tackles. Parks is 25th in Division III passes defended. Junior defensive lineman Kenen Barlowe (North Chesterfield) has 14 tackles, nine solo, 2.0 for loss, 1.5 sacks and one quarterback hurry. He is tied for ninth in the ODAC in sacks. Sophomore safety Aaron Diggs Berry (Glen Allen) also has 14 tackles, five solo, and 1.0 for loss. Sophomore defensive end Braden Lyons (Virginia Beach) has 11 tackles, six solo, 3.0 for loss, 2.0 sacks, one pass breakup and one forced fumble. He is also tied for second in the ODAC in forced fumbles, is tied for fourth in sacks and tied for sixth in tackles for loss. Freshman defensive lineman Matthew Wright (Canton, GA) is tied for first in the ODAC in fumbles recovered (2). Matthew is fourth in Division III in fumbles recovered.

Sophomore placekicker/punter Hank Webb (Salisbury, NC) has averaged 39.5 yards on six punts, including a long of 55 yards, one fair-caught and one inside the 20. He is 10-12 on PAT kicks (.833) and 2-3 on field goals (.667), including a long of 33 yards, and has averaged 56.0 yards (nine-yard line) on 16 kickoffs with two touchbacks. Webb is tied for first in the ODAC with two field goals and is second in field goal percentage. Senior punter/placekicker Camden Richardson (Midlothian) has averaged 36.8 yards on five punts, including a long of 46 yards, and has averaged 53.7 yards (11-yard line) on three kickoffs.

Will Foley has averaged 25.0 yards on 13 kick returns, including a long of 42 yards. He is sixth in the ODAC in kick return average. Will is ninth in Division III combined kick returns (325). Senior wide receiver Aaron Chaney (Belmont, NC) has averaged 10.4 yards on five punt returns, including a long of 26 yards. He leads the ODAC in punt return average.

Scouting the Hornets
Sophomore quarterback Mekhi Brown has passed for 786 yards (68-108-2) and nine touchdowns with two interceptions thrown in three games, and adds seven yards rushing on 10 attempts and two touchdowns. Senior running back Aidan McCloskey has rushed for 196 yards on 27 attempts (7.3) and two touchdowns, and adds seven receptions for 52 yards receiving. Senior running back Bryce Buchanan has rushed for 95 yards on 27 attempts (3.5) and one touchdown, and adds three receptions for 26 yards receiving and one touchdown. Junior wide receiver Jackson McFarland has 14 receptions for 172 yards receiving and three touchdowns. Junior wide receiver Caleb Weston has 11 receptions for 129 yards receiving and three touchdowns. Junior wide receiver Roge't Walker has 10 receptions for 172 yards receiving and one touchdown. Freshman wide receiver Will Yoder has seven receptions for 78 yards receiving and one touchdown.

Sophomore linebacker Ace Heinrichs has 21 tackles, 11 solo. Sophomore defensive back Jaren Mitchell has 17 tackles, 14 solo, one interception returned 62 yards for a touchdown, one pass breakup, one forced fumble and one fumble recovered. Sophomore linebacker Nick English has 17 tackles, eight solo, and one quarterback hurry. Sophomore cornerback Eric May has 16 tackles, 10 solo, one pass breakup and one fumble recovered. Sophomore linebacker Steven Jones has 12 tackles, seven solo, 2.5 for loss, one interception, one pass breakup and three quarterback hurries. Junior defensive end Ryan Apietu has 10 tackles, six solo, 3.5 for loss, 2.5 sacks and four quarterback hurries. Sophomore linebacker Jacob Marion has eight tackles, six solo, 2.5 for loss, one interception returned 21 yards for a touchdown and one forced fumble.

Junior safety/punter Connor Moyssiadis has averaged 34.4 yards on 14 punts, including a long of 51 yards, with three fair-caught, one inside the 20 and one touchback. Junior placekicker Carson Gallant is 14-17 (.824) on PAT kicks and 1-1 on field goals, including a long of 35 yards, and has averaged 53.4 yards on 20 kickoffs (12-yard line) with no touchbacks. Roge't Walker has averaged 19.3 yards on seven kick returns, including a long of 25 yards, and has averaged 5.0 yards on six punt returns, including a long of 12 yards. Sophomore running back Jordyn Thomas has averaged 24.5 yards on two kick returns, including a long of 31 yards.

2,000 Career Rushing Yards

surpassed 2,000 career yards rushing with his 156-yard effort at Wabash (9/5). He currently totals 2,484 career rushing yards on 448 career attempts (5.5) and 26 career touchdowns in 29 career games, and ranks eighth all-time in career rushing yards and 10th in career touchdowns.

He had two 100-yard receiving games in 2024: a career-high 121 yards on six receptions and two touchdowns vs. Averett (10/26/24) ... 103 yards on four receptions and two touchdowns at Ferrum (10/19/24).

William V. Campbell Trophy®
Manning Lasso
is the program's seventh-straight semifinalist for the William V. Campbell Trophy®, college football's premier scholar-athlete award. Manning is among a record 206 semifinalists from all divisions, while the only one from the ODAC and among the 44 selected from NCAA Division III. He follows in the footsteps of  Tyler Howerton '21, Kaleb Smith '22, Michael Harris '23, George Langhammer '24, Will Thomas '25 and Robert Clarke '26—Howerton went on to become one of 12 finalists for the prestigious award in 2020. Manning is a Dean's List student majoring in Economics and Business with a minor in Rhetoric and has attained a 3.44 GPA.

Hampden-Sydney Football
H-SC has a 131-year history of football, amassing 592 wins since beginning in 1892. The Tigers have experienced great success over the years, including nine ODAC Championships, 10 Mason-Dixon Conference Championships, seven NCAA Division III Championship Playoff appearances, 88 All-America selections, 13 Academic All-America selections and 229 First Team All-ODAC honorees. H-SC also played in the 1970 and 1971 Knute Rockne Bowls (NCAA College Division East Regional Championship).

From Division III To FBS Arkansas
Ryan Silverfield '03 (52-27)
became the 35th head coach in the University of Arkansas football history in November 2025. Ryan won his coaching debut with the Razorbacks of the Southeastern Conference (SEC), a 31-14 home win past North Alabama on September 5 in Fayetteville. Silverfield was one of the most successful head coaches in the country at the University of Memphis (50-25), including a pair of 10-plus win seasons in 2023 and 2024, while earning bowl eligibility in all six years. With eight wins in 2025, Memphis posted 29 victories over the last three seasons to be among the nation's Top 15 programs in wins. His final season with the Tigers also extended the Memphis program's streak to 12-straight bowl appearances – the longest streak among non-Power 4 programs in the nation. Ryan coached four seasons as an undergraduate at H-SC, starting as an offensive assistant in 2000, serving as the defensive line coach during 2001 and 2002, before coaching the tight ends and H-backs in 2003.
