WINCHESTER, Va. -- Sophomore quarterback Wade Warren (Raleigh, NC) came off the bench and passed for a game-high and career-high 144 yards, and sophomore running back Terry Hicks (Clayton, NC) added a rushing touchdown, but Hampden-Sydney College dropped a 35-7 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) football decision on the road at Shenandoah University on Saturday afternoon in Winchester. Jalen Redfearn rushed for a game-high 247 yards and two touchdowns on 38 carries for the host Hornets (7-2, 4-2), who led 21-0 at halftime against the visiting Tigers (5-4, 3-3), en route to their home win. The Garnet & Grey will return home to host archrival and No. 24 Randolph-Macon College (8-1, 6-0) next Saturday, November 16, at 1 p.m. in the 129th edition of "The Game" on Fulton Field at Lewis C. Everett Stadium.

SU scored its first touchdown at 5:27 of the first quarter when Bryce Buchanan ran in from seven yards out, and Scott Martin added the first of his five PAT kicks for the 7-0 advantage. The Hornets added two touchdowns in the second quarter, the first on a 13-yard run by Steven Hugney at 9:58, and the second on a two-yard run by Redfearn at 2:43 for the 21-0 margin at halftime. Unfortunately, H-SC junior quarterback and team captain Carter Sido (Dallas, TX) was sacked late in the opening half and did not return after being injured on the play.

The Tigers scored the only touchdown of the third quarter when Hicks ran in from two yards out with 3:39 on the clock, and senior placekicker Elijah Swett (Matthews, NC) added the PAT kick for a 21-7 margin. The score completed an 11-play, 65-yard drive that included 15 yards on the ground by Hicks, along with completions of 11 yards from Warren to Hicks and 14 yards from Warren to sophomore wide receiver Ethan Dowdy (Powhatan).

The Garnet & Grey had taken their first possession of the quarter and drove to the SU two-yard line before an interception in the end zone. Warren had connected with senior wide receiver Austin Fernandez (Warrenton) for pass plays of 17 and 18 yards, along with a 10-yard completion to redshirt-freshman wide receiver Manning Lasso (Raleigh, NC), while adding an 11-yard run, as well, before the scoring threat ended.

The Hornets secured the outcome with a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns, the first on an 11-yard pass from Hugney to Broden Domenico at 13:56, and the second on a five-yard run by Redfearn with 3:52 left to play.

Following the first score of the final quarter, freshman running back Kaelan Ferris (McLean) returned the kickoff 50 yards to give H-SC good field position at the SU 41-yard line. The Tigers, however, turned the ball over on downs at the home team's five-yard line—a possession that was aided by a pair of penalties against the Hornets.

Warren passed for his game-high and career-high 144 yards (13-21-1) with one interception for H-SC, adding a career-high 39 yards rushing on eight attempts. Sido passed for 45 yards (5-10-0) with no interceptions, adding four yards rushing on three attempts. Hicks rushed for 27 yards and one touchdown on 14 attempts, adding 40 yards receiving on five receptions. Dowdy had 58 yards receiving on five receptions, Fernandez had 55 yards receiving on four receptions and Manning Lasso had 20 yards receiving on two receptions.

Junior strong safety Markevus Graves-Franklin (Lynchburg) finished with a game-high and career-high 16 tackles, including nine solo, for Tigers. Freshman linebacker Frank Brewer (Charlotte, NC) had a career-high 13 tackles, including nine solo, as well, along with one tackle for loss—a sack—one pass breakup and one fumble recovered. Senior free safety Joseph Pierre (Mobile, AL) had 10 tackles to equal his career-high, along with a fumble recovered, while senior linebacker Walker Marsh (Raleigh, NC) and junior defensive end Eddie Allen (Richmond) each added career-highs with nine tackles apiece.

Hugney passed for 137 yards (12-17-0) and one touchdown with no interceptions thrown for SU, adding 45 yards rushing and one touchdown on 10 attempts. Redfearn had his game-highs of 247 yards rushing and two touchdowns on 38 attempts, while Buchanan had 83 yards rushing and one touchdown on three attempts. Domenico had a game-high 94 yards receiving and one touchdown on seven receptions. Matt Conroy had 11 tackles for the Hornets.

As mentioned, next weekend is the 129th edition of "The Game" at Everett Stadium—considered the oldest small school rivalry in the South. It will also be Senior Day for 21 Tigers playing their final game on the Hill.
