Hampden-Sydney Announces 2026 Baseball Team Captains

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Hampden-Sydney College second-year head baseball coach Michael Mulvey has announced the program's 2026 Team Captains. Serving in the leadership roles this season are senior right-handed pitcher Sterling Austin (Petersburg), senior outfielder Greer Farr (Southern Shores, NC), senior right-handed pitcher Alex Fitz-Hugh (Chesterfield), senior outfielder Chase Sanford (Mechanicsville), senior outfielder Jack Wilson (Petersburg) and junior infielder/right-handed pitcher Jase Howell (Portsmouth). Fitz-Hugh, Sanford and Wilson are each second-year captains, while Austin, Farr and Howell are each first-year captains.

"Through a long and thoughtful process, the program has offered the captaincy to these six, and all have accepted to take the position," said Mulvey. "Our staff is extremely proud of this group and the leadership they display on a daily basis. Many of them are successful on the field but also showcase the qualities of leaders in other aspects of their lives. We will rely on their leadership as we navigate through the rigors of a tough schedule, and feel confident they will continue to push the culture of this program in the right direction. This is a great group of captains."

Sterling Austin is a fourth-year team member and returning starter in the pitching rotation. He has made 42 career mound appearances, including 27 career starts and one career complete game. Austin has a career record of 8-12 with a 5.95 career ERA through 146.2 career innings pitched with 99 career strikeouts. Sterling is the son of Calvin and Melinda Austin.

Greer Farr is a fourth-year team member and returning outfielder. He has started 30 of 57 career game with a career batting average of .312 (39-125), three career home runs, eight career doubles, 26 career runs, 27 career RBIs, 20 career walks, two career sacrifice flies, one career sacrifice hit and five career stolen bases. Greer is the son of Steve and Kirsten Farr.

Alex Fitz-Hugh is a fourth-year team member and returning relief pitcher. He has made 40 career mound appearances, all in relief. Fitz-Hugh has a career record of 5-5 and seven career saves (tied for third all-time at H-SC) with a 4.42 career ERA through 71.1 career innings pitched with 78 career strikeouts. Alex is the son of George and Danielle Fitz-Hugh.

Chase Sanford is a fourth-year team member and returning starter in the outfield. He has started 29 of 53 career games with a career batting average of .350 (42-120), two career home runs, four career triples, nine career doubles, 29 career runs, 26 career RBIs, 16 career walks, five career sacrifice flies, one career sacrifice hit and 12 career stolen bases. Chase is the son of Jamie and Kristi Sanford.

Jack Wilson is a fourth-year team member and returning starter in the outfield. He has started 81 of 100 career games with a career batting average of .265 (81-306), nine career home runs, four career triples, 20 career doubles, 82 career runs, 55 career RBIs, 37 career walks, four career sacrifice flies, four career sacrifice hits and 20 career stolen bases. Jack is the son of Pat and Kelly Wilson.

Jase Howell is a third-year team member and returning starter in the infield. He has started 56 of 65 career games with a career batting average of .338 (66-195), two career home runs, eight career doubles, 34 career runs, 41 career RBIs, 20 career walks, two career sacrifice flies, four sacrifice hits and five career stolen bases. Jase is the son of Jason Howell and Sarah Howell.

H-SC will open the season at the Joe Ferebee Classic hosted by Pfeiffer University on February 14-15 in Misenheimer, North Carolina.
