(17)Hampden-Sydney Rolls Past Visiting Mary Baldwin 71-40

BOX SCORE

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. --
Sophomore guard Santana Lynch (Dallas, TX) scored a game-high 13 points, adding five rebounds, and senior guard Colin Radcliffe (Richlands, NC) added season-highs of 12 points and six rebounds off the bench, to lead (17)Hampden-Sydney College to a 71-40 non-conference men's basketball home win past Mary Baldwin University in the second annual Charlie Cobb Classic on Saturday evening on Tony Shaver Court in Diaz Arena at the renovated Kirby Field House. The Tigers (3-1) used a 10-0 run to lead 34-17 at halftime and limited the Fighting Squirrels to 20% (13-66) from the field. Marquise Dunklin scored 12 points for MBU (1-3).

"Such an amazing environment tonight, it felt great being back in Kirby honoring Coach Shaver and so many former players," said seventh-year head coach Caleb Kimbrough. "We came to play defensively and had several different players step up in different ways. Good team win. We got better today ... need to protect home court again tomorrow."

H-SC jumped out to a quick 7-2 lead at 17:33 as sophomore guards Tugg Bizzelle (Baltimore, MD), Travis Stickney (Mount Pleasant, SC) and Peter Moye (Charlotte, NC) scored on a pair of layups and a three-point field goal, respectively. A jumper by freshman guard Tyree White (Indian Trail, NC) made it 11-5 with 13:10 on the clock, and it was 16-6 at 11:17 after an offensive rebound basket by senior forward Shane Fernald (Charlotte, NC). MBU was within 24-17 with 4:08 left in the half after an old-fashioned three-point play by Dunklin. The Tigers, however, closed the opening 20 minutes on a 10-0 run to lead 34-17 at halftime—getting points from five different players—including a three-pointer by Stickney.

H-SC continued its momentum to begin the second half, outscoring MBU 9-2 to lead 43-19 at 17:09 after a basket in the lane by junior center Alex Cannon (Loganville) that followed a two-handed slam dunk by Cannon on an offensive rebound basket. A layup and three-pointer by Moye along with two baskets from Fernald had the Tigers ahead 52-23 with 13:56 remaining. An old-fashioned three-point play by White and a three-pointer from Lynch made it 58-25 at 11:52, and the Garnet & Grey took their largest lead at 66-27 with 7:50 on the clock after a layup by Radcliffe toward the final margin of victory.

Lynch led H-SC with his game-high 13 points, making 5-7 field goals (1-1 3FGs) and 2-2 free throws, adding his five rebounds. Radcliffe posted his season-high 12 points and six rebounds off the bench for the Tigers. Bizzelle contributed nine points, five rebounds and a game-high four assists, while Moye and Fernald each had eight points with Moye adding five rebounds and Fernald adding six rebounds and a game-high four assists. Stickney had seven points, five rebounds and three assists, and Cannon had five points, a season-high and career-high-tying nine rebounds and two blocks. H-SC shot 47% (27-57) from the field, including 35% (6-17) on three-pointers, and 50% (11-22) at the free throw line. The Tigers enjoyed a 38-16 advantage in points scored in the paint and a 29-17 advantage in bench points.

Dunklin led MBU with his 12 points. Raymond Benton finished with seven points and a game-high 10 rebounds off the bench for the Fighting Squirrels. MBU shot 20% (13-66) from the field, including 15% (4-27) on three-pointers, and 63% (10-16) at the line.

H-SC will play Pfeiffer (NC) University on day two of the Charlie Cobb Classic on Sunday, November 23, at 4:30 p.m. in Diaz Arena.

The College conducted a special naming ceremony for the new "Tony Shaver Court" on Saturday just prior to tip-off. Coach Shaver was joined by his family and friends, along with many of his former players for the recognition that included words from former Director of Athletics Joe Bush, four-year team member Alex Robbins '99 and Shaver.
