HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Hampden-Sydney College will conduct a special naming ceremony for the new
"Tony Shaver Court" on Saturday, November 22, prior to the Tigers' scheduled home-opening basketball game against Mary Baldwin University at 5:30 p.m. during the Charlie Cobb Classic. The time is approximate following the first game on Saturday between Pfeiffer (NC) University and Colorado College that tips at 3 p.m.
Coach Shaver is the all-time winningest basketball coach at the College, compiling a 17-year record of 358-121, including 207-81 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC). He led the Tigers to eight ODAC Men's Basketball Tournament Championships (1989, 1992, 1995, 1997-99, 2001-02) and 11 NCAA Division III Tournament Appearances (1989, 1992, 1994, 1995, 1997-2003), including two Final Four Appearances (1999, 2003)—finishing as the National Runner-Up in 1999. The Garnet & Grey advanced to the Sweet 16 six times (1992, 1994-95), 1998-99, 2003) and the Elite Eight three times (1995, 1999, 2003) under Coach Shaver who led the program to 12 20-win seasons and was a three-time ODAC and NCAA South Region Coach of the Year (1995, 1999-2000). He coached six All-Americans, 12 All-Region and 33 All-ODAC selections and received a Special Citation into the Hampden-Sydney Athletic Hall of Fame in 2004.
