FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- Hampden-Sydney College had six participants compete in the 2025 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division III Men's South/Southeast Regional Championships. Those competing were seniors
Casey Coffey (Midlothian) and
Dillon McReynolds (Abingdon), junior
Thomas Davis (Charlotte, NC), sophomores
Jonathan Fogle (Midlothian) and
Emerson Rice (Columbia, SC), and freshman
Slade Funderburk (Camden, SC).
The Tigers had only two competitors in the singles draw, both of whom were in the championship draw: Davis and Rice. Rice battled in his match after dropping the first set 6-4; he was able to equalize the match at one set apiece with a 6-4 win in set two. In the final set, he was defeated 10-7 to fall 4-6, 6-4, 7-10. In Davis' match, he dropped the first set 6-0 and dropped the second 6-4 to fall 6-0, 6-4. Both dropped down to the consolation bracket, where Rice fell in his match 8-2, but Davis picked up an 8-3 win to advance to the consolation round of 16, where he fell in a final point tiebreaker 7-4 to drop the match 8(7)-7(4).
Davis and Rice then teamed up for Championship doubles action, where they were defeated in the round of 64, 8-4. They dropped down into the consolation bracket, where they took an 8(7)-7(4) win in the Round of 64 losers Consolation bracket round of 16. The pair was then defeated in the quarterfinals by the same scoreline that they had just won by 8(7)-7(4).
The B1 doubles draw saw Coffey and McReynolds team up and start off the draw with an 8-2 win in the round of 16. The pair then grabbed an 8-6 win in the quarterfinals to advance to the semifinals. In the semis, Coffey and McReynolds earned a trip to the finals of the draw with an 8-6 win. In the finals, the pair's run came to an end with an 8-4 defeat.
The final draw for the Tigers was the B2 doubles, which saw Fogle and Funderburk team up and take a quarterfinal victory 8-2 to get started. The pair then took an 8-6 semifinal victory to advance to the final and see the Tigers reach the final in both the B1 and B2 doubles draws. In the final, the pair took an 8-5 win to claim the B2 doubles crown.
The ITA Regional Championships marked the end of the fall tennis season; the team will return in the spring for dual matches and Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play.
