Hampden-Sydney Ties For Seventh At The Tartan Invitational

LIGONIER, Pa. --
Sophomore Luke Combs (Newport News) posted a third-round score of 76 on Tuesday to lead Hampden-Sydney College to final round of 308 and a 54-hole team score of 908 (297-303-308) at The Tartan Invitational played at the prestigious Laurel Valley Golf Club in Ligonier, Pennsylvania. The Tigers finished in a tie for seventh among the 16 teams in the highly competitive field that featured 11 schools ranked nationally in the latest Bushnell/Golfweek DIII Coaches Poll, including eight of the Top 10.

Sophomore Sean Acree (Chesterfield) led H-SC with his 71-73-77—221 that tied for seventh individually among the 87 collegiate golfers. He was followed by Combs (74-75-76—225, T-19th), junior team captain Jack Barnes (Manakin Sabot) (76-76-78—230, T-40th), freshman Matthew Teegardin (Charleston, SC) (76-79-79—234, T-60th) and sophomore Oliver Tobin (Charlotte, NC) (85-79-77—241, T-81st). Combs had three birdies and 10 pars during his four-over final round on the 7,022-yard, par 72 course. Acree had two birdies and eight pars. Barnes had one eagle, two birdies and seven pars, and recorded a '2' on the 370-yard, par 4 15th hole for the second-straight day. Teegardin had one birdie and nine pars. Tobin had three birdies and nine pars.

Acree tied for third among the tournament field in par 4 scoring (4.07, +2), tied for fourth in birdies (11) and tied for 19th in par 3 scoring (3.33, +4), while adding 28 pars. Combs tied for fourth in par 3 scoring (3.08, +1) and tied for 11th in pars (33), while adding seven birdies. Barnes tied for first in eagles (2) and tied for 19th in par 5 scoring (4.83, -2), while adding seven birdies and 26 pars. Teegardin finished with six birdies and 25 pars. Tobin had five birdies and 27 pars.

Nationally-ranked #6 Huntingdon (AL) won the event with its 296-295-295—886, while Joshua Wang of #4 Carnegie Mellon (PA) took individual medalist honors at even-par 74-73-69—216. Huntingdon was followed among the Top Five by #5 Illinois Wesleyan (889) and #23 Rochester (NY) (889), Carnegie Mellon (890) and #1 Emory (GA) (899). The unranked Tigers (908) finished four shots behind fellow Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) member and #8 Washington and Lee (904), while placing ahead of ODAC schools #18 Lynchburg (911) and #19 Guilford (NC) (954).

Laurel Valley GC, located just south of Pittsburgh, opened in 1959 and was later renovated by Arnold Palmer. The exclusive club has played host to several major events over the years, including the 1965 PGA Championship, the 1975 Ryder Cup, the 1989 U.S. Senior Open and the 2005 Senior PGA Championship.

H-SC has completed its fall campaign and will compete again next spring in the two-day, 54-hole Savannah Invitational on March 2-3, 2026 at The Club at Savannah Harbor in Savannah, Georgia. The Tigers' B Team will conclude its fall season next week at the 36-hole VSGA Intercollegiate on October 20-21 at the Lake Chesdin Golf Club in Chesterfield.
