HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Hampden-Sydney College, ranked No. 1 in the latest D3hoops.com Top 25, plays Virginia Wesleyan University in the semifinals of the 2024 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Tournament on Saturday afternoon, February 24, at 3 p.m. at the Salem Civic Center in Salem. NCAA Division III's top-ranked Tigers are 24-2 overall (#2 seed) following an 81-61 win past #10 seed Ferrum College on Feb. 22 in the quarterfinals in Salem. The Marlins are 19-7 overall (#6 seed) after a 67-60 win past nationally-ranked No. 7 (#3 seed) Guilford (NC) College in the quarterfinals. The second half of the semifinal contest (due to a scheduling conflict at the station) can be heard locally on WVHL Radio, Kickin' Country 92.9 FM, and will also be available worldwide on the Internet at wvhl.net or via the TuneIn Radio App, while the entire game will be available to watch courtesy of the ODAC Sports Network.

Head Coach Caleb Kimbrough
H-SC is led by the fifth-year head coach who took over the program on April 4, 2019. The former head coach at Huntingdon (AL) College from 2016-19, Kimbrough is the 19th head coach in the 114-year history of the storied Hampden-Sydney program. He is no stranger to the ODAC, having played four years at Guilford (NC) College and coached six years with the Quakers, and one year at Washington and Lee. Kimbrough is 76-37 overall at the College, including 45-23 in ODAC games. Caleb was both the 2022-23 National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Division III District 6 Coach of the Year, and the ODAC Men's Basketball Bob Johnson Coach of the Year.

Scouting No. 1 Hampden-Sydney
H-SC has five-straight wins and 19 wins in its last 20 games overall. The Tigers are enjoying their finest season in 21 years, when the program was 25-1 through 26 games in 2002-03. The 24 overall wins are the most under fifth-year Head Coach Caleb Kimbrough, while the 14 conference wins this year equal that of last season, also the most under Coach Kimbrough. In addition, H-SC has attained its 17th 20-win season in program history, and second consecutive 20-win campaign, marking the first time since 2002-03 (28-4) and 2003-04 (25-5) with back-to-back 20-win seasons. The Tigers returned to the No. 1 national ranking in this week's D3hoops.com Top 25 — the sixth week this season at No. 1, while the Garnet & Grey have now been ranked among the Top Five for nine of 11 weeks during 2023-24. H-SC is also ranked No. 1 among the latest NCAA Division III Top 16 and Region VI Rankings. The Tigers are extremely balanced offensively with three players averaging in double-figure scoring among its five starters that are each scoring at least 6.2 points per game, while seven Tigers are playing 15-plus minutes among 11 playing eight minutes per game. H-SC has been led by its All-ODAC trio of senior forward Davidson Hubbard (Charlotte, NC) with his 15.3 points (39 3FGs) and 7.3 rebounds, senior guard and team captain Adam Brazil (Mooresville, NC) with his 12.9 points (56 3FGs) and 3.7 assists, along with fifth-year guard Ryan Clements (Conyers, GA) with his 11.1 points, 4.3 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 1.8 steals. Joining them in the lineup have been senior guard Alex Elliott (Marietta, GA) (6.2 points, 4.5 rebounds, 23 3FGs) and senior guard/forward and team captain Josiah Hardy (Ashburn) (6.2 points, 3.8 rebounds). Fifth-year guard Chase Turner (Virginia Beach) (4.7 points, 3.5 rebounds, 2.2 assists), fifth-year forward and team captain Miles Harris (Virginia Beach) (4.3 points, 3.2 rebounds, 27 3FGs) and sophomore forward Shane Fernald (Charlotte, NC) (4.1 points) have provided solid depth. The Tigers are shooting 46% (726-1567) from the field, including 38% (209-555) on three-point field goals (8.0 per game), and 73% (270-368) at the free throw line. H-SC has averaged 74.3 points, and allowed only 58.0 points, for a +16.3 scoring margin.

Scouting Virginia Wesleyan
The Marlins are coached by 24th-year head coach Dave Macedo, and were ranked as high as No. 18 nationally earlier this season back on Jan. 2. VWU has been led by sophomore guard Khai Seargeant with his 12.1 points (22 3FGs) and 3.0 rebounds, along with senior guard Jordan Crump with his 9.6 points (40 3FGs) and 4.0 rebounds. The Marlins shoot 42% (626-1484) from the field, including 33% (185-569) on three-pointers (7.1 per game), and 70% (306-440) at the line; scoring 67.0 points, and yielding only 59.0 points, for a +8.0 scoring margin.

Series History
H-SC and VWU are playing for the 92nd time since first meeting on January 8, 1973 at H-SC. The Tigers lead the overall series at 51-40 (32-31 ODAC), including four-straight wins: 71-47 on Feb. 14 in Virginia Beach ... 77-54 on Jan. 31 in S. Douglas Fleet Gymnasium ... 78-69 on Feb. 24, 2023 in the 2023 ODAC Tournament Quarterfinals in Salem ... and 73-66 on Feb. 1, 2023 in Virginia Beach. The Marlins had won 19 of 24 meetings, prior to the last two seasons.

Last Meeting (2/14/24)
Adam Brazil scored a game-high 22 points to lead H-SC to a 71-47 ODAC road win at (RV) VWU. Josiah Hardy and Davidson Hubbard each finished with 10 points as the visiting Tigers closed the first half on a 33-14 run to lead 39-25 at halftime. The host Marlins were led by Amarion Wilson with 15 points.

2023-24 All-ODAC Honors
Davidson Hubbard and Adam Brazil were each named First Team All-ODAC, while Ryan Clements was named Third Team All-ODAC, as announced on Feb. 21. Clements has been named All-ODAC for the third time—also Third Team in 2022-23 and Second Team in 2021-22, while Hubbard and Brazil have been named All-ODAC for the second time—Hubbard was also First Team in 2022-23, and Brazil was Second Team last year.

2023-24 ODAC Scholar-Athlete Award
Adam Brazil garnered ODAC/Virginia Farm Bureau Insurance Scholar-Athlete of the Year honors from the league's athletic communications personnel. Adam is an English major and Dean's List student with a 3.81 GPA, while a three-time member of the ODAC All-Academic Team (2021-23).

100 Collegiate Coaching Wins
Caleb Kimbrough won his 100th game as a collegiate head coach with a 71-47 road win at VWU on Feb. 14. Coach Kimbrough is currently 102-77 in eight years, including 76-37 in five years at H-SC.

NCAA Top 16 / Region VI Rankings
H-SC was ranked first among the NCAA Division III Top 16, announced on Feb. 15. The Tigers remained first in Region VI of the NCAA Regional Rankings, released on Feb. 20. Selection Monday is Feb. 26.

#1 In D3hoops.com Top 25
H-SC returned to the No. 1 national ranking in this week's D3hoops.com Top 25, released on Feb. 19. The Tigers moved up one spot from their previous No. 2 ranking—the sixth week this season at No. 1, and the Garnet & Grey have now been ranked among the top five nationally for nine of 11 weeks during 2023-24. H-SC earned 619 points in this week's poll, including 21 of 25 first-place votes.

NCAA Division III Statistics
H-SC currently ranks fourth nationally in winning percentage (.923), fifth in both scoring defense (58.0) and scoring margin (16.3), 14th in assist/turnover ratio (1.48), 18th in field goal percentage defense (38.3), 24th in both fewest turnovers (10.6) and turnover margin (4.0), and 25th in both rebound margin (7.2) and three-point percentage (37.7). Adam Brazil ranks 13th in NCAA Division III assist/turnover ratio (3.00).

It's A Team Game: So Unselfish
H-SC has had seven different student-athletes lead the team in scoring this season ... seven different team members lead the squad in rebounding ... and six different players lead the team in assists. The Tigers have been led in scoring at times by Davidson Hubbard (11), Adam Brazil (7), Ryan Clements (5), Alex Elliott (1), Miles Harris (1) and Ayman McGowan (1). The Garnet & Grey have been led in rebounding at times by Hubbard (17), Clements (4), Elliott (3), Harris (2), Josiah Hardy (2), Chase Turner (2) and Shane Fernald (1). H-SC has been led in assists at times by Brazil (13), Clements (12), Turner (5), Elliott (1), Fernald (1) and DJ Wright (1).

The Team Three-Point Stat
H-SC has made at least one three-point field goal in 486 consecutive games, dating back to a home game vs. Emory & Henry on Dec. 3, 2005 (0-1 3FGA). Ironically, the Tigers won that high-scoring contest 130-99. H-SC made a season-high 17 three-pointers vs. Rose-Hulman (IN) on Nov. 18 (17-36 3FGA), one of four games this season with 10-plus three-pointers.

Double-Double Man
Davidson Hubbard has posted five double-doubles this season, and 22 during his four years at H-SC. He had a massive 16-point, 16-rebound game during a 72-63 neutral-site win past (RV)Widener (PA) at the Al Van Wie/Wooster Rotary Classic on Nov. 17 in Wooster, Ohio ... along with a 20-point, 11-rebound effort during a 60-52 road win at Ferrum on Jan. 3. Hubbard has been close to three more double-doubles with either nine rebounds or nine points, along with double-digits in the other, including a huge 31-point, nine-rebound game during an 85-67 road win at No. 1 John Carroll on Dec. 19 in University Heights, Ohio.

Career Watch
Ryan Clements ranks 11th in career scoring at H-SC with 1,387 career points in 113 career games. Davidson Hubbard ranks 39th with 1,077 career points in 84 career games. Russell Turner '92 is the all-time leader with 2,272 career points. Clements ranks fifth in career steals with 190. Ralph Baker '89 is the all-time leader with 258 career steals. Clements ranks sixth in career assists with 347. Mike Murray '15 is the all-time leader with 433 career assists. Hubbard is tied for ninth in career blocks with 49. Mike Thompson '04 is the all-time leader with 136 career blocks.

Program History
H-SC is competing in its 114th-year of basketball during 2023-24. The Tigers began this season with an overall record of 1486-1093 since beginning in 1908, and currently are 1510-1095. H-SC has posted 63 winning seasons (this season included), 17 seasons with at least 20 wins (this season included), and has won 10 ODAC Tournament Championships and made 15 NCAA Division III Tournament appearances. The Tigers have advanced to the Final Four two times previously, and to the National Championship once.

ODAC Tournament History
H-SC is now 61-35 all-time in ODAC Tournament games. The Tigers have played in a record 15 ODAC Tournament Championship games, winning 10 ODAC Tournament Titles (tied for most with Randolph-Macon and Roanoke). The 61 tournament wins are the most of any school. H-SC last won a conference tournament championship in 2007, defeating Roanoke 77-62. The Tigers last played in the title contest in 2014, falling to Virginia Wesleyan 77-74. H-SC won eight ODAC Tournament Championships from 1989-2002.

2023-24 Team Captains
Leading the Tigers are fifth-year Miles Harris, along with seniors Adam Brazil and Josiah Hardy. Harris and Brazil are each serving in the leadership role for their second season, while Hardy is a first-year captain. Miles is the son of Randy Harris and Corey Bacs and is majoring in economics and business. Adam is the son of Mark and Kristen Brazil and is majoring in English. Josiah is the son of Vernal Hardy and Felicia Miller and is majoring in economics and business.

Three Former Tigers Are Division I Head Coaches
H-SC currently has three former basketball team members and graduates of the College that are serving as NCAA Division I head coaches. Russell Turner '92 is in his 14th year at UC Irvine ... Ryan Odom '96 is in his first season at VCU and his eighth season as a DI head coach (UMBC, Utah State) ... Griff Aldrich '96 is in his sixth year at Longwood. Entering this season, Turner was 265-170 at UCI ... Odom was 141-85 overall, including 44-25 in two years at USU and 97-60 in five years at UMBC ... Aldrich was 88-72 at Longwood.
