No. 2 Hampden-Sydney Welcomes Mary Washington For Senior Day On Saturday At 2 p.m.

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Hampden-Sydney College, ranked No. 2 this week in the latest D3hoops.com Top 25, welcomes the University of Mary Washington in non-conference action to complete the regular season on Saturday afternoon, February 17, at 2 p.m. in S. Douglas Fleet Gymnasium at Kirby Field House. NCAA Division III's second-ranked Tigers are 22-2 overall following a 71-47 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) road win at (RV) Virginia Wesleyan University on Feb. 14 in Virginia Beach. The Eagles are 16-8 overall after a 65-64 road win at Salisbury (MD) University on Feb. 14. It's Senior Day for Ryan Clements, Miles Harris, Chase Turner, Alex Elliott, Josiah Hardy, Shawn Hodge, Davidson Hubbard and DJ Wright, as a special pregame ceremony will begin at 1:55 p.m. The Tigers are also giving away free t-shirts to the first 150 fans in attendance, and the contest will be available to watch on the Tiger Sports Network, pregame beginning at 1:30 p.m.

Head Coach Caleb Kimbrough
H-SC is led by the fifth-year head coach who took over the program on April 4, 2019. The former head coach at Huntingdon (AL) College from 2016-19, Kimbrough is the 19th head coach in the 114-year history of the storied Hampden-Sydney program. He is no stranger to the ODAC, having played four years at Guilford (NC) College and coached six years with the Quakers, and one year at Washington and Lee University. Kimbrough is 74-37 overall at the College, including 45-23 in ODAC games. Caleb was both the 2022-23 National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Division III District 6 Coach of the Year, and the ODAC Men's Basketball Bob Johnson Coach of the Year.

Scouting No. 2 Hampden-Sydney
H-SC has attained its 17th 20-win season in program history, and second consecutive 20-win campaign, marking the first time since 2002-03 (28-4) and 2003-04 (25-5) with back-to-back 20-win seasons. The 22 wins equal last season's win total and also equals the most wins since 2012-13 (23-5). The Tigers are extremely balanced offensively with three players averaging in double-figure scoring among its five starters that are each scoring at least 6.1 points per game, while seven Tigers are playing 15-plus minutes among 11 playing eight-plus minutes per game. H-SC has been led by senior forward Davidson Hubbard (Charlotte, NC) with his 15.0 points (34 3FGs) and 7.5 rebounds, senior guard and team captain Adam Brazil (Mooresville, NC) with his 12.9 points (50 3FGs) and 3.7 assists, along with fifth-year guard Ryan Clements (Conyers, GA) with his 11.1 points, 4.4 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 1.7 steals. Joining them in the lineup have been senior guard Alex Elliott (Marietta, GA) (6.3 points, 4.3 rebounds, 23 3FGs) and senior guard/forward and team captain Josiah Hardy (Ashburn) (6.3 points, 3.7 rebounds). Fifth-year guard Chase Turner (Virginia Beach) (4.7 points, 3.6 rebounds, 2.2 assists), fifth-year forward and team captain Miles Harris (Virginia Beach) (4.0 points, 3.4 rebounds, 23 3FGs) and sophomore forward Shane Fernald (Charlotte, NC) (4.2 points) have provided solid depth. The Tigers are shooting 46% (674-1461) from the field, including 37% (191-512) on three-point field goals (8.0 per game), and 72% (241-334) at the free throw line. H-SC has averaged 74.2 points, and allowed only 57.8 points, for a +16.4 scoring margin.

Scouting Mary Washington
The Eagles are coached by 10th-year head coach Marcus Kahn. UMW has been led by senior guard Zack Blue with his 11.4 points (24 3FGs), 3.5 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 2.3 steals, along with  sophomore guard Dorian Davis with his 10.8 points (36 3FGs) and 4.0 rebounds. The Eagles shoot 44% (591-1356) from the field, including 31% (128-412) on three-pointers, and 68% (329-483) at the line; scoring 68.3 points, and yielding only 59.2 points, for a +9.1 scoring margin.

Series History
H-SC and UMW are playing for the 25th time since first meeting on January 11, 1981. The Tigers lead the series at 17-7, though the Eagles won 79-66 last season on November 22, 2022 in Fredericksburg. Prior to that, H-SC had won 14 consecutive games against the Eagles, including 84-71 on December 18, 2021 in Fleet Gym, the last time UMW visited.

Last Season's Meeting (11/22/22)
Davidson Hubbard posted a double-double with 22 points and 11 rebounds, but H-SC dropped a 79-66 non-conference decision on the road at UMW. DJ Wright added 21 points off the bench for the visiting Tigers, who trailed 40-23 at halftime. Dorian Davis scored a game-high 24 points off the bench for the host Eagles, who defeated H-SC for the first time since 1987.

100 Collegiate Coaching Wins
Caleb Kimbrough won his 100th game as a collegiate head coach with the 71-47 road win at VWU on Feb. 14. Coach Kimbrough is now 100-77 in eight years, including 74-37 in five years at H-SC.

NCAA Region VI Rankings/Top 16 Announced
H-SC is ranked first in Region VI of this week's NCAA Regional Rankings. In addition, the NCAA announced its current men's basketball Top 16, and the Tigers are at No. 1 … though there remains lots of basketball yet to play before the Official Selection Monday on Feb. 26.

#3 In D3hoops.com Top 25
H-SC is ranked No. 2 nationally this week in the latest D3hoops.com Top 25. The Tigers moved up one spot from the No. 3 ranking last week—the Garnet & Grey have been ranked among the Top Five for eight of 10 weeks during 2023-24. H-SC earned 601 points in this week's poll, including six first-place votes, while John Carroll (OH) (22-1) remains ranked No. 1 for the second consecutive week with 609 points and 16 first-place votes.

NCAA Division III Statistics
H-SC currently ranks fourth nationally in both winning percentage (.917) and scoring defense (57.8), fifth in scoring margin (16.4), 15th in assist/turnover ratio (1.45), 17th in field goal percentage defense (38.3), 22nd in rebound margin (7.7), 26th in turnover margin (4.1), 27th in fewest turnovers (10.8) and 30th in three-point percentage (37.3). Adam Brazil ranks 19th in NCAA Division III assist/turnover ratio (2.87).

Bevo Francis Award Top 100 Watch List
Davidson Hubbard was named to the 2023-24 Bevo Francis Award Top 100 Watch List on Jan. 15. The Clarence "Bevo" Francis Award is presented annually to the player who has had the finest overall season within Small College Basketball to include NCAA Divisions II and III, NAIA, USCAA and NCCAA. Hubbard did not make the Top 50 Watch List announced on Feb. 15.

The Team Three-Point Stat
H-SC has made at least one three-point field goal in 484 consecutive games, dating back to a home game vs. Emory & Henry on Dec. 3, 2005 (0-1 3FGA). Ironically, the Tigers won that high-scoring contest 130-99. H-SC made a season-high 17 three-pointers vs. Rose-Hulman (IN) on Nov. 18 (17-36 3FGA).

Career Watch
Ryan Clements ranks 12th in career scoring at H-SC with 1,365 career points in 111 career games. Davidson Hubbard ranks 42nd with 1,039 career points in 82 career games. Russell Turner '92 is the all-time leader with 2,272 career points. Clements ranks fifth in career steals with 187. Ralph Baker '89 is the all-time leader with 258 career steals. Clements ranks seventh in career assists with 339. Mike Murray '15 is the all-time leader with 433 career assists. Hubbard ranks 10th in career blocks with 48. Mike Thompson '04 is the all-time leader with 136 career blocks.

2023-24 Team Captains
Leading the Tigers are fifth-year Miles Harris, along with seniors Adam Brazil and Josiah Hardy. Harris and Brazil are each serving in the leadership role for their second season, while Hardy is a first-year captain. Miles is the son of Randy Harris and Corey Bacs and is majoring in economics and business. Adam is the son of Mark and Kristen Brazil and is majoring in English. Josiah is the son of Vernal Hardy and Felicia Miller and is majoring in economics and business.

Three Former Tigers Are Division I Head Coaches
H-SC currently has three former basketball team members and graduates of the College that are serving as NCAA Division I head coaches. Russell Turner '92 is in his 14th year at UC Irvine ... Ryan Odom '96 is in his first season at VCU and his eighth season as a DI head coach (UMBC, Utah State) ... Griff Aldrich '96 is in his sixth year at Longwood. Entering this season, Turner was 265-170 at UCI ... Odom was 141-85 overall, including 44-25 in two years at USU and 97-60 in five years at UMBC ... Aldrich was 88-72 at Longwood.

Up Next
H-SC will play in the 2024 ODAC Tournament on Feb. 22-25 at the Salem Civic Center in Salem. Quarterfinals will be played on Thursday, Feb. 22, followed by the semifinals on Saturday, Feb. 24 and the championship on Sunday, Feb. 25. Details will be announced late on Saturday, Feb. 17.
