Hampden-Sydney Plays On The Road At Shenandoah On Saturday At 1 p.m.

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Hampden-Sydney College plays on the road at Shenandoah University in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) football action on Saturday afternoon, November 9, at 1 p.m. on GloFiber Field at Shentel Stadium in Winchester. The visiting Tigers are 5-3 overall, 3-2 in the ODAC (T-3rd), while the host Hornets are 6-2 overall, also 3-2 in the ODAC (T-3rd). The game can be heard locally on WVHL Radio, Kickin' Country 92.9 FM, and will also be available worldwide on the Internet at wvhl.net or via the TuneIn Radio App, pregame airing at 12:30 p.m., while available to watch as well at suhornets.com.

H-SC took a 28-21 road victory at conference opponent Bridgewater College on Nov. 2 at the Jopson Athletic Complex in Bridgewater. The visiting Tigers never trailed against the host Eagles, leading 10-0 after one quarter, 17-7 at halftime and 20-14 after three quarters en route to the triumph. SU won on the road at league member Averett University 41-14, leading 21-0 after one quarter, 31-0 at halftime and 41-0 after three quarters toward its victory.

Head Coach Vince Luvara
H-SC is led by the first-year head coach who took over the program on December 7, 2023. The former defensive coordinator at Washington & Jefferson (PA) College since 2016, Luvara is the 29th head coach in the 130-year history of the storied Hampden-Sydney program. The Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania native is no stranger to NCAA Division III, having played four years at Allegheny (PA) College and coached one year at Allegheny and two years at Misericordia (PA) University—each school members of DIII.

The Series
H-SC has won three of the last four games between the two schools and leads the overall series against SU, 8-4. The Tigers defeated the Hornets 26-25 in overtime last Nov. 4, 2023 on Fulton Field at Lewis C. Everett Stadium, that thrilling victory coming after a 28-7 home win on September 18, 2021 at Everett Stadium, which followed a 26-0 road win on March 5, 2021 in Winchester. SU defeated H-SC 23-7 the last time the two teams played off I-81 on Nov. 5, 2022.

Scouting The Tigers
Junior quarterback and team captain Carter Sido (Dallas, TX) has passed for 1,797 yards (137-227-4) and 22 touchdowns with only four interceptions thrown, adding 198 yards rushing and two touchdowns. He leads the ODAC in passing touchdowns and passing efficiency (155.3), and is third in passing yards, total offense per game (249.4) and completion percentage (60.4). Sido ranks 22nd in Division III passing touchdowns, 26th in overall points responsible for (150) and 27th in points responsible for per game (18.8).

Sophomore running back Terry Hicks (Clayton, NC) has rushed for 728 yards on 131 attempts (5.6) and eight touchdowns in seven games, adding 10 receptions for 88 yards. He leads the ODAC in rushing yards per game (104.0) and all-purpose yards per game (116.6), is third in rushing yards, tied for fourth in touchdowns and eighth in total offense per game (104.0). Hicks ranks 28th in DIII rushing yards per game and 49th in rushing yards.

Sophomore wide receiver Ethan Dowdy (Powhatan) has 49 receptions for 665 yards and nine touchdowns. He leads the ODAC in receiving yards, receiving yards per game (83.1) and receiving touchdowns, is second in receptions and receptions per game (6.1), tied for second in total touchdowns (10) and eighth in all-purpose yards per game (107.5). Dowdy ranks 22nd in DIII receiving touchdowns, 49th in receptions per game and 50th in total touchdowns. Redshirt-freshman wide receiver Manning Lasso (Raleigh, NC) has 35 receptions for 459 yards and seven touchdowns. Manning is second in the ODAC in receiving touchdowns, fourth in receptions per game (4.4), receiving yards and receiving yards per game (57.4), and 16th in all-purpose yards per game (57.4). Senior tight end Sutton Lasso (Raleigh, NC) has 24 receptions for 340 yards and four touchdowns. Sutton is tied for fifth in the ODAC in receiving touchdowns, is seventh in receiving yards and receiving yards per game (42.5), and eighth in receptions and receptions per game (3.0). Senior wide receiver Austin Fernandez (Warrenton) has 12 receptions for 184 yards and three touchdowns. He is tied for eighth in the ODAC in receiving touchdowns, is 18th in receiving yards, 19th in receiving yards per game (23.0) and tied for 20th in receptions.

Senior linebacker and team captain Brendan Wallace (Virginia Beach) has 65 tackles, including 11.5 for loss, 5.0 sacks, three QB hurries, one pass breakup and two fumbles recovered. He is tied for first in the ODAC sacks, tied for second in tackles for loss and fumbles recovered, and fifth in tackles and tackles per game (8.1). Wallace ranks 17th in DIII fumbles recovered and 45th in tackles for loss. Junior linebacker and team captain Robert Clarke (Atlanta, GA) has 64 tackles, including 4.5 for loss, 1.0 sacks, two pass breakups and two fumbles recovered. He is tied for second in the ODAC in fumbles recovered, is sixth in tackles and tackles per game (8.0), and tied for 14th in tackles for loss. Clarke ranks 17th in DIII fumbles recovered. Junior nose tackle Andrew Arthur-Humphrey (Woodbridge) has 36 tackles, including 2.5 for loss and 0.5 sacks. Freshman defensive end Jordan Williams (Washington, DC) also has 36 tackles, including 4.0 for loss, 2.0 sacks and four QB hurries. Junior cornerback James Townsend (Hardeeville, SC) has 35 tackles, including 3.5 for loss, two interceptions and six pass breakups. He is tied for eighth in the ODAC in interceptions. Freshman cornerback Parks Cromwell (Charlotte, NC) also has 35 tackles, including 1.0 for loss, two interceptions, six pass breakups and one forced fumble. He is tied for fourth in the ODAC in forced fumbles and tied for eighth in interceptions. Senior free safety Joseph Pierre (Mobile, AL) has 34 tackles, including 0.5 for loss an one interception. He is tied for 17th in the ODAC in interceptions. Freshman strong safety Mitch Ladamus (Fort Mill, SC) has 32 tackles, including 0.5 for loss, and one pass breakup.

Senior placekicker Elijah Swett (Matthews, NC) is 28-30 on PAT kicks (.933) and 7-10 on field goal attempts (.700), including a long of 40 yards. He has averaged 57.8 yards on 47 kickoffs (eight-yard line) with four touchbacks. He is second in the ODAC in field goals, third in kick scoring points (49) and fifth in field goal percentage. Swett ranks 33rd in DIII field goals per game (.88) and field goal percentage. Sophomore punter Camden Richardson (Midlothian) has averaged 37.2 yards on 19 punts, including a long of 56 yards, with two fair-caught, three downed inside the 20 and three punts of 50-plus yards in seven games. Junior running back Joseph Gonzalez (Spotsylvania) has averaged 22.6 yards on 22 kick returns, including a long of 61 yards. He is fifth in the ODAC in kick return average, and ranks 31st in DIII combined kick return yards (498).

Scouting The Hornets
Senior quarterback Steven Hugney has passed for 1,864 yards (133-221-9) and 16 touchdowns with nine interceptions thrown, adding 274 yards rushing and three touchdowns. Junior running back Jalen Redfearn has rushed for 477 yards on 80 attempts (6.0) and 10 touchdowns, adding two receptions for 52 yards and one touchdown. Fifth-year wide receiver Broden Domenico has 45 receptions for 616 yards and five touchdowns. Junior linebacker Matt Conroy has 74 tackles, including 6.5 for loss, 1.0 sacks, three interceptions, three pass breakups, three QB hurries and two forced fumbles. Fifth-year free safety Ahvyon Boothe has 55 tackles, two pass breakups and one forced fumble. Senior placekicker Scott Martin is 39-41 on PAT kicks and 4-5 on field goal attempts, including a long of 40 yards. He has averaged 58.7 yards on 44 kickoffs with seven touchbacks. Junior punter Cody Crawford has averaged 40.0 yards on 19 punts, including a long of 55 yards, with four fair-caught and seven downed inside the 20. Fifth-year defensive back Sean Perry has averaged 33.6 yards on five kick returns, including a long of 48 yards. Broden Domenico has averaged 21.3 yards on 12 kick returns, including a long of 33 yards.

Team Captains
Leading the Tigers are senior center Logan Cohn (Henrico) and senior linebacker Brendan Wallace, along with junior linebacker Robert Clarke, junior quarterback Carter Sido and junior right tackle William Stimmel (Atlanta, GA). All five are serving in the leadership roles for the first time. Logan is the son of Stefan and Heather Cohn. Brendan is the son of Jason and Kristiana Wallace. Robert is the son of Tom and Jill Clarke. Carter is the son of Chris Sido and Tova Sido. William is the son Carl and Claudia Stimmel.

William V. Campbell Trophy®
Senior defensive end Will Thomas (Blacksburg) is the program's fifth-straight semifinalist for the William V. Campbell Trophy®, college football's premier scholar-athlete award. Will is among a record number of 203 semifinalists from all divisions, while the only one from the ODAC and among the 44 selected from Division III. He follows in the footsteps of Tyler Howerton '21, Kaleb Smith '22, Michael Harris '23 and George Langhammer '24—Howerton went on to become one of 12 finalists for the prestigious annual award in 2020. Will is a Dean's List student majoring in English with a minor in Spanish and has attained a 3.40 GPA. He is the son of Eric Thomas and Anna LoMascolo.

Hampden-Sydney Football
H-SC has a 130 year history of football, amassing 583 wins since beginning in 1892. The Tigers have experienced great success over the years, including nine ODAC Championships, nine Mason-Dixon Conference Championships, seven NCAA Division III Championship appearances, 87 All-Americans, 16 Academic All-America selections and 222 First Team All-ODAC honorees. H-SC also played in the 1970 and 1971 Knute Rockne Bowls (NCAA College Division East Regional Championship).

From Division III To FBS Memphis
Ryan Silverfield '03 became the 25th head coach in the University of Memphis football history in December 2019 and began his tenure by leading the Tigers into their first major bowl game appearance: the Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic in Dallas. Ryan is currently 38-20 overall in his fifth season at the helm of the Tigers, including 7-2 in 2024. He led Memphis to a record of 10-3 in 2023, following a 7-6 season in 2022, after going 8-3 season in 2020, and the Tigers were 6-6 in 2021. Ryan coached four seasons as an undergraduate at H-SC, starting as an offensive assistant in 2000, serving as the defensive line coach during 2001 and 2002, before coaching the tight ends and H-backs in 2003.
