No. 1 Hampden-Sydney Welcomes Roanoke On Saturday At 2 p.m.

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Hampden-Sydney College, ranked No. 1 for the fourth-straight week in the latest D3hoops.com Top 25, welcomes Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) opponent Roanoke College on Saturday afternoon, January 27, at 2 p.m. in S. Douglas Fleet Gymnasium at Kirby Field House. NCAA Division III's top-ranked Tigers are 17-1 overall, including 9-1 in the ODAC, following an 81-61 ODAC home win past University of Lynchburg on Jan. 24 in Fleet Gym for their 12th-straight victory. The Maroons are 12-7 overall, 5-5 in the ODAC, after a 75-55 ODAC home win past Bridgewater College on Jan. 24 for their fifth-straight victory and eighth win in nine games. It's free admission for all regular season home contests and the game can be heard locally on WVHL Radio, Kickin' Country 92.9 FM, and will also be available worldwide on the Internet at wvhl.net or via the TuneIn Radio App, while available to watch, as well, on the Tiger Sports Network, pregame airing at 1:30 p.m.

Head Coach Caleb Kimbrough
H-SC is led by the fifth-year head coach who took over the program on April 4, 2019. The former head coach at Huntingdon (AL) College from 2016-19, Kimbrough is the 19th head coach in the 114-year history of the storied Hampden-Sydney program. He is no stranger to the ODAC, having played four years at Guilford (NC) College and coached six years with the Quakers, and one year at Washington and Lee University. Kimbrough is 69-36 overall at the College, including 40-22 in ODAC games. Caleb was both the 2022-23 National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Division III District 6 Coach of the Year, and the ODAC Men's Basketball Bob Johnson Coach of the Year.

Scouting No. 1 Hampden-Sydney
H-SC continues to enjoy its finest start to a season since 2002-03 when the program began 22-0 en route to a 28-4 campaign that included an NCAA Tournament Final Four appearance. This year's team is extremely balanced offensively with three players averaging in double-figure scoring among its five starters that are each scoring at least 6.2 points per game, while seven Tigers are playing at least 15-plus minutes among 11 playing seven-plus minutes per game. H-SC has been led by senior forward Davidson Hubbard (Charlotte, NC) with his 15.4 points (31 3FGs) and 7.7 rebounds, senior guard and team captain Adam Brazil (Mooresville, NC) with his 13.1 points (36 3FGs) and 3.9 assists, along with fifth-year guard Ryan Clements (Conyers, GA) with his 12.0 points, 4.4 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 1.7 steals. Joining them in the lineup have been senior guard Alex Elliott (Marietta, GA) (6.9 points, 4.7 rebounds, 18 3FGs) and senior guard/forward and team captain Josiah Hardy (Ashburn) (6.2 points, 3.8 rebounds). Fifth-year guard Chase Turner (Virginia Beach) (4.7 points, 3.6 rebounds, 2.3 assists), junior guard Ayman McGowan (Memphis, TN) (4.5 points, 19 3FGs), fifth-year forward and team captain Miles Harris (Virginia Beach) (3.7 points, 3.4 rebounds, 16 3FGs) and sophomore forward Shane Fernald (Charlotte, NC) (3.3 points) have provided solid depth. The Tigers are shooting 46% (509-1108) from the field, including 38% (151-397) on three-point field goals (8.4 per game), and 74% (184-248) at the free throw line. H-SC has averaged 75.2 points, and allowed only 59.5 points, for a +15.7 scoring margin.

Scouting Roanoke
The Maroons are coached by eighth-year head coach Clay Nunley. Roanoke has been led by senior Justin Kuthan with his 15.5 points (70% FG) and 7.8 rebounds, junior Zach Rosenthal with his 13.6 points (47 3FGs), junior Joshua Morse with his 11.1 points and 6.1 rebounds, sophomore Marcus Morgan with his 10.8 points and 5.7 rebounds, along with junior Joshua McClary with his 10.7 points and 4.9 assists. The Maroons shoot 46% (512-1126) from the field, including 34% (104-305) on three-pointers, and 72% (309-428) at the line; scoring 75.6 points, and yielding 69.6 points, for a +6.0 scoring margin.

ODAC Series History
H-SC and RC are playing for the 94th time as ODAC opponents since the Maroons became basketball members for the 1980-81 season. The Tigers narrowly lead the closely-contested series at 48-45, including two-straight wins, most recent being a 57-51 road win on Jan. 28, 2023 in Salem.

H-SC remains ranked No. 1 nationally for the fourth-straight week in the latest D3hoops.com Top 25. It's the longest stretch that the Tigers have been ranked first in the national poll for NCAA Division III men's basketball since an eight-week run at the top during 1999-2000 (26-2). H-SC earned 624 points in this week's poll, including 24 of 25 first-place votes.

H-SC currently ranks third nationally in winning percentage (94.4), 10th in scoring defense (59.5) and scoring margin (15.7), 14th in assist/turnover ratio (1.44), 16th in field goal percentage defense (38.2), 18th in three-point percentage (38.0), 37th in rebound margin (6.8), 39th in turnover margin (3.5), 40th in fewest turnovers (11.3) and 47th in assists (16.3). Adam Brazil ranks 24th in NCAA Division III assist/turnover ratio (2.73).

Bevo Francis Award Top 100 Watch List
Davidson Hubbard was named to the 2023-24 Bevo Francis Award Top 100 Watch List on Jan. 15. The Clarence "Bevo" Francis Award is presented annually to the player who has had the finest overall season within Small College Basketball to include NCAA Divisions II and III, NAIA, USCAA and NCCAA.

The Team Three-Point Stat
H-SC has made at least one three-point field goal in 478 consecutive games, dating back to a home game vs. Emory & Henry on Dec. 3, 2005 (0-1 3FGA). Ironically, the Tigers won that contest 130-99. H-SC's 142 three-pointers this season includes three games of at least 11, with a season-high 17 three-pointers vs. Rose-Hulman (IN) on Nov. 18 (17-36 3FGA). The season-low is four at Ferrum on Jan. 3 (4-22 3FGA).

Career Watch
Ryan Clements ranks 13th in career scoring with 1,315 career points in 105 career games (12.5). Russell Turner '92 is the all-time leader with 2,272 career points. Clements is tied for eighth in career steals with 174 career steals (1.7). Ralph Baker '89 is the all-time leader with 258 career steals. Davidson Hubbard is 10th in career blocks with 48 career blocks in 76 career games (0.6). Mike Thompson '04 is the all-time leader with 136 career blocks.

2023-24 Team Captains
Leading the Tigers are fifth-year Miles Harris, along with seniors Adam Brazil and Josiah Hardy. Harris and Brazil are each serving in the leadership role for their second season, while Hardy is a first-year captain. Miles is the son of Randy Harris and Corey Bacs and is majoring in economics and business. Adam is the son of Mark and Kristen Brazil and is majoring in English. Josiah is the son of Vernal Hardy and Felicia Miller and is majoring in economics and business.

Program History
H-SC is competing in its 114th-year of basketball during 2023-24. The Tigers began this season with an overall record of 1486-1093 since beginning in 1908, and currently are 1503-1094. H-SC has posted 63 winning seasons (this season included), 15 seasons with at least 20 wins, and has won 10 ODAC Tournament Championships and made 15 NCAA Division III Tournament appearances. The Tigers have advanced to the Final Four two times previously, and to the National Championship once.
 
Three Former Tigers Are Division I Head Coaches
H-SC currently has three former basketball team members and graduates of the College that are serving as NCAA Division I head coaches. Russell Turner '92 is in his 14th year at UC Irvine ... Ryan Odom '96 is in his first season at VCU and his eighth season as a DI head coach (UMBC, Utah State) ... Griff Aldrich '96 is in his sixth year at Longwood. Entering this season, Turner was 265-170 at UCI ... Odom was 141-85 overall, including 44-25 in two years at USU and 97-60 in five years at UMBC ... Aldrich was 88-72 at Longwood.

H-SC remains at home while in the midst of its four-straight ODAC contests in the friendly confines of S. Douglas Fleet Gymnasium at Kirby Field House. The Tigers host (RV) Virginia Wesleyan University on Wednesday, Jan. 31, at 7 p.m., before archrival and No. 10 Randolph-Macon College visits on Saturday, Feb. 3, at 2 p.m.
