Top-Ranked Tigers Play At Ferrum

No. 1 Hampden-Sydney Plays At Ferrum On Wednesday Night At 7 p.m.

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Hampden-Sydney College, ranked No. 1 in this week's D3hoops.com Top 25, plays on the road at Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) opponent Ferrum College on Wednesday night, January 3, at 7 p.m. in Ferrum. The top-ranked Tigers are 10-1 overall, including 2-1 in the ODAC, following a 64-58 non-conference home win past Salisbury (MD) on December 30 in S. Douglas Fleet Gymnasium at Kirby Field House. The Panthers are 12-1 overall, 3-1 in the ODAC, after an 89-48 non-conference home win past Methodist (NC) on Dec. 30. The game will be available to watch via Ferrum College Athletics.

Head Coach Caleb Kimbrough
H-SC is led by the fifth-year head coach who took over the program on April 4, 2019. The former head coach at Huntingdon (AL) College from 2016-19, Kimbrough is the 19th head coach in the 114-year history of the storied Hampden-Sydney program. He is no stranger to the ODAC, having played four years at Guilford (NC) and coached six years with the Quakers, and one year at Washington and Lee. Kimbrough is 62-36 overall at the College, including 33-22 in ODAC games. Caleb was both the 2022-23 National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Division III District 6 Coach of the Year, and the ODAC Men's Basketball Bob Johnson Coach of the Year.

Scouting No. 1 Hampden-Sydney
H-SC is extremely balanced offensively with three players averaging in double-figure scoring among its five starters that are each scoring at least 5.4 points per game, while 10 Tigers are playing at least eight-plus minutes per game. H-SC has been led by senior forward Davidson Hubbard (Charlotte, NC) with his 15.2 points (19 3FGs) and 8.0 rebounds, fifth-year guard Ryan Clements (Conyers, GA) with his 12.0 points, 4.3 rebounds and 3.2 assists, along with senior guard and team captain Adam Brazil (Mooresville, NC) with his 11.9 points (21 3FGs) and 4.7 assists. Joining them in the lineup have been senior guard Alex Elliott (Marietta, GA) (7.5 points, 4.2 rebounds, 14 3FGs) and senior guard/forward and team captain Josiah Hardy (Ashburn) (5.4 points, 3.7 rebounds). Senior guard DJ Wright (Greensboro, GA) (5.4 points, 10 3FGs), fifth-year guard Chase Turner (Virginia Beach) (4.2 points, 2.3 assists), fifth-year forward and team captain Miles Harris (Virginia Beach) (4.1 points, 4.1 rebounds, 11 3FGs), junior guard Ayman McGowan (Memphis, TN) (3.9 points, 11 3FGs) and sophomore forward Shane Fernald (Charlotte, NC) (3.7 points) have provided solid depth. The Tigers are shooting 46% (300-660) from the field, including 40% (99-245) on three-point field goals (9.0 per game), and 76% (115-151) at the free throw line. H-SC has averaged 74.0 points, and allowed only 59.8 points, for a +14.2 scoring margin.

Scouting Ferrum
The Panthers are coached by second-year head coach Patrick Corrigan '13, a former four-year team member of the Tigers and team captain as a senior when H-SC finished 23-5 and made an NCAA Tournament appearance (2012-13). Patrick's father, David Corrigan '79, was a three-year letterman for the Tigers (1976-79). FC has been led by junior guard Jikari Johnson (18.6 points, 35 3FGs), sophomore forward Alfredo Abel-Rivera (13.1 points, 6.9 rebounds), junior forward Bryant Wall (11.0 points, 6.7 rebounds) and senior forward Calvin Washington (10.4 points). The high-scoring Panthers shoot 49% (432-876) from the field, including 37% (87-237) on three-pointers (6.7 per game), and 67% (156-233) at the line; scoring 85.2 points, and yielding just 60.8 points, for an impressive +24.4 scoring margin.

Series History
H-SC leads the overall series between the two schools at 10-3, including three-straight wins, and four wins in the last five contests played against FC. The Tigers defeated the Panthers twice last season, including a 94-74 home win on Jan. 11, 2023 and an 82-77 road win on February 11, 2023.

H-SC is ranked No. 1 nationally in the week four D3hoops.com Top 25, released on Jan. 2. It's the first time the Tigers have been ranked first in the national poll since Jan. 12, 2004 (week seven). Case Western Reserve (OH) is No. 2, fellow ODAC member Guilford is No. 3, Calvin (MI) is No. 4 and Tufts (MA) is No. 5.

ODAC Player of the Week
Davidson Hubbard was named the ODAC Men's Basketball Player of the Week for games played Dec. 18, 2023-Jan. 1, 2024. He averaged 21.5 points and 9.5 rebounds with five three-point field goals, four assists and three steals during an 85-67 road win at nationally-ranked No. 1 John Carroll (OH), and a 64-58 home win past Salisbury (MD). Hubbard scored a career-high and game-high 31 points (13-23 FGs, 3-9 3FGs, 2-2 FTs), adding a game-high nine rebounds, along with three assists and two steals during the road win at No. 1 John Carroll on Dec. 19 … and followed with 12 points (5-10 FGs, 2-5 3FGs) and a game-high 10 rebounds for his third double-double of the season and 20th of his career, adding two steals, during the home win past Salisbury on Dec. 30. He leads the nationally-ranked No. 1 Tigers in scoring (15.2), rebounding (8.0) and field goal percentage (51%, 68-134), adding 1.0 assists, along with 12 steals and two blocks—shooting 39% (19-49) on three-pointers and 80% (12-15) at the free throw line.

Career Watch
Ryan Clements ranks 20th in career scoring with 1,231 career points in 98 career games (12.6). Russell Turner '92 is the all-time leader with 2,272 career points. Clements is ninth in career steals with 165 (1.7). Ralph Baker '89 is the all-time leader with 258 career steals. Davidson Hubbard is tied for 10th in career blocks with 46 career blocks in 69 career games (0.7). Mike Thompson '04 is the all-time leader with 136 career blocks.

2023-24 Team Captains
Leading the Tigers are fifth-year Miles Harris, along with seniors Adam Brazil and Josiah Hardy. Harris and Brazil are each serving in the leadership role for their second season, while Hardy is a first-year captain. Miles is the son of Randy Harris and Corey Bacs and is majoring in economics and business. Adam is the son of Mark and Kristen Brazil and is majoring in English. Josiah is the son of Vernal Hardy and Felicia Miller and is majoring in economics and business.
 
Three Former Tigers Are Division I Head Coaches
H-SC currently has three former basketball team members and graduates of the College that are serving as NCAA Division I head coaches. Russell Turner '92 is in his 14th year at UC Irvine ... Ryan Odom '96 is in his first season at VCU and his eighth season as a DI head coach (UMBC, Utah State) ... Griff Aldrich '96 is in his sixth year at Longwood. Entering this season, Turner was 265-170 at UCI ... Odom was 141-85 overall, including 44-25 in two years at USU and 97-60 in five years at UMBC ... Aldrich was 88-72 at Longwood.
