FINAL RESULTS
GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The Hampden-Sydney College Golf team posted a two-day, 54-hole team score of 296-296-303--895 on Monday and Tuesday to finish 14th among 18 teams at the
Gate City Invitational played at the Starmount Forest Country Club in Greensboro, North Carolina. Junior
Nick Rubino (Charlotte, NC) led the Tigers with his three-under par 73-69-68--210, a new collegiate-best, that tied for fourth individually among the 90 collegiate golfers on the par 71, 6,593-yard layout.
Rubino posted four birdies and 13 pars during his final round of 68 that equaled the fourth-best round of the day, and tied for the fifth-best round overall, en route to his Top Five finish and lowest 54-hole score as a Tiger. He was followed by junior
John Hutcheson (Edina, MN) (74-75-77--226, T-54th), sophomore
Ryan Porterfield (Cumming, GA) (75-76-77--228, T-61st), junior
Rece Lott (Fort Worth, TX) (74-76-81--231, T-71st) and freshman
Joseph Weinstein (Midlothian) (78-77-82--237, T-85th). Hutcheson had 13 pars in round three, while Porterfield had two birdies and 11 pars, Lott contributed two birdies and nine pars, and Weinstein had two birdies and seven pars. Porterfield also posted a new collegiate-best for 54 holes, and Weinstein was playing in his first tournament as a Tiger.
Rubino also finished second among the tournament field in birdies (13), tied for second in eagles (1), tied for fifth in par 5 scoring (4.44, -5) and tied for ninth in par 4 scoring (4.06, +2).
The highly-competitive tournament field featured 12 of the Top 25 teams in 2023-24 Preseason Bushnell/Golfweek DIII Coaches Poll, including defending national champion and No. 1 Carnegie Mellon (PA), No. 2 Methodist (NC), No. 3 Emory (GA), No. 6 Guilford (NC), No. 7 Oglethorpe (GA), No. 8 (tie) Christopher Newport and No. 10 Piedmont (GA).
No. 3 Emory won the event with its 21-under par 280-283-268--831, while Emory's Jackson Klutznick took individual medalist honors at 16-under par 67-69-61--197 that included a 10-under par final round 61.
H-SC will compete again at the
O'Briant-Jensen Memorial Tournament on October 2-3, a 36-hole tournament to be played at The Cardinal by Pete Dye in Greensboro, North Carolina.
