Hampden-Sydney Stands 11th At The Gate City Invitational

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The Hampden-Sydney College Golf team posted consecutive rounds of 296 and 296 on Monday for a 36-hole score of 592 to stand 11th among 18 teams at the Gate City Invitational being played at the Starmount Forest Country Club in Greensboro, North Carolina. Junior Nick Rubino (Charlotte, NC) is leading the Tigers with his two-round score of even par 73-69--142 that is tied for eighth individually among the 90 collegiate golfers.

Rubino posted one eagle, nine birdies and 18 pars during his first two rounds on the par 71, 6,593-yard layout. He is being followed by juniors John Hutcheson (Edina, MN) (74-75--149, T-44th) and Rece Lott (Fort Worth, TX) (74-76--150, T-50th), sophomore Ryan Porterfield (Cumming, GA) (75-76--151, 56th) and freshman Joseph Weinstein (Midlothian) (78-77--155, T-69th). Hutcheson had six birdies and 21 pars. Lott contributed two birdies and 25 pars. Porterfield had six birdies and 16 pars, and Weinstein also had six birdies and 16 pars.

The highly-competitive tournament field features 12 of the Top 25 teams in 2023-24 Preseason Bushnell/Golfweek DIII Coaches Poll, including defending national champion and No. 1 Carnegie Mellon (PA), No. 2 Methodist (NC), No. 3 Emory (GA), No. 6 Guilford (NC), No. 7 Oglethorpe (GA), No. 8 (tie) Christopher Newport and No. 10 Piedmont (GA).

No. 7 Oglethorpe is leading the event with its 282-280--562, while Jackson Klutznick of No. 3 Emory is the individual leader through (his) 36 holes at six-under par 67-69--136.

H-SC will continue and complete its competition in the two-day, 54-hole tournament on Tuesday in Greensboro.
