BOULDER CITY, Nev. -- The Hampden-Sydney College Golf team posted an opening round of 320 on Sunday to stand 16th among 18 teams at the
NCAA Division III Fall Preview being played at the Boulder Creek Golf Club in Boulder City, Nevada. Freshman
Jack Barnes (Manakin Sabot) is leading the Tigers with his round of 77 on the par 72, 7,345-yard Desert Hawk-Coyote Run layout at Boulder Creek that is tied for 22nd individually among the field of 90 collegiate golfers.
Barnes posted two birdies and 10 pars during his opening round, and is being followed by junior
Rece Lott (Fort Worth, TX) (80, T-52nd) and freshman
Owen Sibley (Dallas, TX) (80, T-52nd), along with juniors
Nick Rubino (Charlotte, NC) (83, T-77th) and
John Hutcheson (Edina, MN) (91, 90th). Lott and Sibley each had two birdies and seven pars. Rubino had two birdies and nine pars. Hutcheson had two birdies and four pars.
The highly-competitive tournament field features 12 of 18 teams that are ranked among the Top 25 nationally in the latest Bushnell/Golfweek Division III Coaches' Poll, including seven of the Top 10—No. 10 Sewanee (TN) is leading the event with its 297. Sewanee's Grayson Maddox, along with John Kim of No. 19 Pomona-Pitzer (CA), are the individual leaders at two-under par 70.
H-SC will continue its competition in the three-day, 54-hole tournament with round two on Monday near Las Vegas.
