HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Hampden-Sydney College will host Washington and Lee University in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) football action on Saturday afternoon, October 21, at 1 p.m. on Fulton Field at Lewis C. Everett Stadium. The host Tigers are 4-2 overall, 2-1 in the ODAC, while the visiting Generals are 5-1 overall, 3-0 in the ODAC. It's Homecoming Weekend, along with Team Hall of Fame Weekend in recognition of the 1970 Football Team, the 1971 Football Team, the 1975 Golf Team, the 1998-99 Basketball Team and the 2002-03 Basketball Team—each team will be recognized at halftime. The game can be heard locally on WVHL Radio, Kickin' Country 92.9 FM, and will also be available worldwide on the Internet at wvhl.net or via the TuneIn Radio App, while available to watch as well on the Tiger Sports Network live video stream at hscathletics.com, pregame airing at 12:30 p.m.

Last Week
H-SC took a 31-28 ODAC road win at Averett University on Oct. 14 in Danville. The Tigers trailed 17-14 after one quarter, but led 28-17 at halftime and through three quarters, before a game-winning 29-yard field goal with 43-seconds remaining. W&L took a 41-16 ODAC home win past Ferrum College in Lexington a week ago.

Favret Coaching Final Season
H-SC head coach Marty Favret, the all-time winningest coach in program history, announced on August 20 that 2023 will be his final season of coaching. In 23-plus seasons at the College, he has attained 149 victories (149-88) and led the Tigers to 15 winning seasons with five ODAC Championships (2007, 2009, 2011, 2013, 2014) and six NCAA Division III Football Championship appearances (2007, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2013, 2014). Favret is currently the longest-tenured collegiate football head coach in Virginia.

The Series
H-SC narrowly leads the overall series against W&L, 40-38-2, including a thrilling 44-43 overtime win last season in Lexington. The Generals; however, have won five of the last seven games against the Tigers, including a 32-30 win at Everett Stadium on Oct. 2, 2021. H-SC won seven of the first 10 games between the two schools under Coach Favret, who is 12-10 overall against W&L since 2000. The two programs first met on the gridiron in 1899 with the Generals winning 6-5 in Lexington.

Scouting The Tigers
Senior quarterback Andrew Puccinelli (Glen Allen) has passed for 1,515 yards (111-157-1) and 15 touchdowns with one interception thrown in five games this season, adding one rushing touchdown. Puccinelli made his first start of the season in week three at Greensboro (9/16) and passed for 368 yards (30-42) and three touchdowns, adding the rushing touchdown. He passed for a career-high 448 yards (31-47-0) and three touchdowns last week at Averett (10/14).

Senior running back Melik Frost (Hardeeville, SC) has rushed for 440 yards on 113 attempts and five touchdowns.

Sophomore wide receiver Mason Cunningham (Arlington) has 45 receptions for 565 yards and five touchdowns. Senior wide receiver Jamahdia Whitby (Williamsburg) has 31 receptions for 334 yards and three touchdowns. Junior wide receiver Austin Fernandez (Warrenton) has 25 receptions for 364 yards and three touchdowns. Senior wide receiver Braeden Bowling (Cary, NC) has 17 receptions for 299 yards and three touchdowns.

Senior All-American safety and team captain Will Pickren (Mount Pleasant, SC) has 58 total tackles, including 14 solo, 1.5 tackles for loss, two interceptions, three pass breakups, one fumble recovery/return for a touchdown and one blocked punt. Senior linebacker Dorian Green (Martinsville) has 49 total tackles, including 16 solo, 3.5 tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks, one forced fumble and one quarterback hurry. Senior safety James-Ryan Salvi (Troutville) has 44 total tackles, including 14 solo, 1.5 tackles for loss and one interception. Junior linebacker Jackson Lott (Norfolk) has 38 total tackles, including eight solo, two tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks. Freshman linebacker Harrison Wood (Richmond) has 31 total tackles, including 10 solo, three tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks and one quarterback hurry.

Sophomore placekicker Elijah Swett (Matthews, NC) is 27-31 (87%) on PAT kicks and 5-9 (56%) on field goals, including a season-long of 41 yards, and three blocked. Swett has averaged 57.3 yards on 41 kickoffs (eight-yard line) with three touchbacks. Senior punter George Langhammer (Roanoke) has averaged 36.9 yards on just 12 punts, including a long of 48 yards, with one fair-caught and one inside the 20.

Sophomore wide receiver Joseph Gonzalez (Spotsylvania) has averaged 25.8 yards on 14 kick returns, including a long of 91yards, and one touchdown. Mason Cunningham has averaged 4.2 yards on six punt returns, including a long of seven yards.

Scouting The Generals
Senior quarterback Stephen Murrin has passed for 560 yards (38-68-0) and two touchdowns with no interceptions—adding 238 yards rushing on 45 attempts and two rushing touchdowns. Junior running back Jacob Romero has rushed for 565 yards on 106 attempts and five touchdowns. Freshman running back Anthony Crawford has rushed for 222 yards on 63 attempts and seven touchdowns. Junior running back Marcus Payne has rushed for 174 yards on 19 attempts and five touchdowns. Junior quarterback Andrew Bland has eight receptions for 160 yards, while junior tight end Evan Novak has six receptions for 114 yards and one touchdown. Senior linebacker Hunter Hawk has 41 total tackles, including 20 solo, 4.5 tackles for loss, 0.5 sacks and two pass breakups. Junior linebacker Jalen Todd has 31 total tackles, including 12 solo, 5.5 tackles for loss, two sacks, one pass breakup, one quarterback hurry, one fumble recovery and two forced fumbles. Sophomore safety Jack Johnson has 30 total tackles, including 17 solo, one tackle for loss, two interceptions and two pass breakups. Senior placekicker Arturo Ramirez is 24-28 on PAT kicks (86%) and 1-2 (50%) on field goals, including a season-long of 47 yards, and has averaged 58.7 yards on 34 kickoffs (seven-yard line) with five touchbacks. Sophomore punter Everett Anderson has averaged 33.3 yards on 12 punts, including a long of 51 yards, with three fair-caught and two inside the 20. Andrew Bland has averaged 24.5 yards on four kick returns, including a long of 34 yards, and has averaged 11.5 yards on two punt returns, including a long of 24 yards.

Among the ODAC & National Leaders
Andrew Puccinelli leads the ODAC in passing yards (1,515), passing yards per game (303.0), passing touchdowns (15) and total offense per game (298.6), and is second in passing efficiency (182.0) and completion percentage (70.7)—playing one less game than the other seven league QBs. He ranks 10th in NCAA Division III in passing yards per game, 12th in passing efficiency, 14th in completion percentage, 15th in yards per pass attempt (9.7), 19th in completions per game (22.2), 25th in points responsible for per game (19.2) and 30th in total offense per game.

Mason Cunningham leads the ODAC in receptions (45), receptions per game (7.5), receiving yards (565) and receiving yards per game (94.2), and is tied for second in receiving touchdowns (5). He ranks 12th in Division III receptions per game.

Will Pickren has one of just two fumble returns for a touchdown in the ODAC, is fourth in total tackles (58) and tackles per game (9.7), and tied for fourth in interceptions (2). He ranks 39th in Division III tackles per game.

Joseph Gonzalez has one of only three kickoff returns for a touchdown in the ODAC, and is third in kick return average (25.8). He is tied for fourth in Division III in kickoff return touchdowns (1) and 29th in kick return average.

Jamahdia Whitby is second in the ODAC in receptions (31) and receptions per game (5.2), and fifth in receiving yards (334) and receiving yards per game (55.7).

Elijah Swett is second in the ODAC in kick scoring points (42) and points per game (7.0), and tied for second in field goals (5).

George Langhammer is third in the ODAC in punting average (36.9).

Senior cornerback Tobias Lafayette (Charleston, SC) is tied for third in the ODAC in pass breakups (6) and passes defended (6).

Austin Fernandez is fourth in the ODAC in receiving yards (364) and receiving yards per game (60.7), and tied for fifth in receptions (25).

Melik Frost is fourth in the ODAC in rushing yards (440) and rushing yards per game (73.3).

Sophomore safety Jaylan Long (Martinsville) is tied for fourth in the ODAC in interceptions (2).

Junior defensive end Brendan Wallace (Virginia Beach) is tied for fifth in the ODAC in sacks (2.5).

Sophomore defensive end Jacob McKinney (Springfield) is tied for fifth in the ODAC in sacks (2.5).

Three-Time ... ODAC Offensive Player of the Week
Andrew Puccinelli has already been named the ODAC Football Offensive Player of the Week three times this season. He passed for a game-high 368 yards (30-42-0) and three touchdowns, adding one rushing touchdown, while making his first start of the season during a 58-28 road win at Greensboro (9/16) ... passed for a game-high 296 yards (21-25-1) and four touchdowns—tying his career-high—during a 48-10 home win vs. Ferrum (10/7) ... and passed for a game-high and career-high 448 yards (31-47-0) and three touchdowns during a 31-28 road win at Averett (10/14).

DC Touchdown Club Washington Metro College Football Player of the Week
Mason Cunningham was named the DCTDC Washington Metro College Football Player of the Week for week seven. He had a game-high 10 receptions for a game-high and career-high 199 yards receiving and two touchdowns during a 31-28 road win at Averett (10/14).

Record Watch
2022 First Team AP Division III All-American and three-time First Team All-ODAC safety Will Pickren currently totals 325 career tackles, and now needs just 20 to equal and 21 to surpass and become the school's all-time leader in tackles. Brendan Weinberg '22 is the current career leader in tackles with 345.

300/400-Yard Passing Games
Andrew Puccinelli has four career games with 300-plus yards passing, including a career-high 448 yards (31-47-0) and three touchdowns at Averett (10/14). He has two other 300-yard passing games this season, including 368 yards (30-42-0) and three touchdowns at Greensboro (9/16) in his first start of this season, and second of his career ... and 333 yards (24-37-0) and four touchdowns, tying his career-high, vs. Bridgewater (9/30) ... and had one 300-yard passing game in 2022: 305 yards (28-33-2) and a career-high four touchdowns vs. Greensboro (9/17/22) in his first collegiate start.

100-Yard Receiving Games
Mason Cunningham has six career games with 100-plus yards receiving, including three this season — 103 yards on five receptions and one touchdown vs. Brevard (9/9), 109 yards on eight receptions and two touchdowns vs. Ferrum (10/7) and a career-high 199 yards on 10 receptions and two touchdowns at Averett (10/14). He had three 100-yard receiving games in 2022, including 116 yards on nine receptions and one touchdown vs. Greensboro (9/17), 163 yards on a career-high 13 receptions and a career-high three touchdowns at Ferrum (10/8) and 130 yards on nine receptions and two touchdowns vs. Averett (10/15).

100-Yard Receiving Games
Jamahdia Whitby has two career 100-yard receiving games, both this season, including a career-high 123 yards on eight receptions and one touchdown at Greensboro (9/16) and 101 yards on a career-high 10 receptions at Averett (10/14). His size, speed and athleticism has drawn interest from several National Football League (NFL) teams this fall with their respective visits to practice.

Oh So Close ...
H-SC opponents have converted two game-winning, two-point PAT attempts following touchdowns in the final minutes of the two one-point setbacks this season. Wabash (4-2) scored with 2:02 on the clock and converted a trick-play pass for its 29-28 road win on Sept. 2, while Bridgewater (4-2) scored with just 23-seconds remaining and converted a run for its 39-38 road win on Sept. 30.

William V. Campbell Trophy®
George Langhammer was named a semifinalist for the 2023 William V. Campbell Trophy®, college football's premier scholar-athlete award, as announced on Sept. 27 by the National Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame (NFF). He was among a record number of 201 semifinalists from all divisions, while one of only two from the ODAC and 48 selected from Division III. Langhammer is the College's fourth consecutive semifinalist, following Tyler Howerton '21, Kaleb Smith '22 and Michael Harris '23—Howerton went on to become one of 12 finalists for the prestigious award in 2020. George is a six-time Dean's List student majoring in foreign affairs with a minor in Spanish and has attained a 3.91 GPA.

Team Captains
Leading the Tigers are senior offensive tackle TJ Minter (Chester), Will Pickren, James-Ryan Salvi and senior defensive end Tramell Thompson (Queens, NY). Minter becomes a two-time team captain after serving in the leadership role last season, as well, while Pickren, Salvi and Thompson are each first-time team captains. TJ is the son of the late Tony Minter and Catherine Minter. Will is the son of Wilson and Renee Pickren. James-Ryan is the son of Ryan and Denise Salvi. Tramell is the son of Chelsea Thompson.

Hampden-Sydney Football
H-SC has a 128-year history of football, amassing 576 wins since beginning in 1892. The Tigers have experienced great success over the years, including nine ODAC Championships, nine Mason-Dixon Conference Championships, seven NCAA Division III Championship appearances, 86 All-Americans, 16 Academic All-America selections and 214 First Team All-ODAC honorees. H-SC also played in the 1970 and 1971 Knute Rockne Bowls (NCAA College Division East Regional Championship)—these two teams among the five teams being honored this weekend.
