Lexington, VA The Hampden-Sydney Rugby team traveled to Lexington, VA on Saturday and played the Washington and Lee Generals to a 17-17 tie in an exciting game that featured four lead changes and a tieing score. In their opening Cardinal Collegiate Rugby Fall '15's match, the Tigers took the first lead at 5-0 as a result of a Zachary Hanslick try in the 31st minute. The try failed and H-SC held that lead into halftime.
Washington and Lee responded at the start of the second half with two scores from strong forward ball. Both conversions failed, giving the Generals a 10-5 lead. Joseph Newcomer scored a try for the Tigers to knot the score at 10.
Graeme Ebert then completed the conversion to give the Tigers the lead at 12-10. W&L then pulled ahead 17-12 after pressuring the goal line for five minutes and a try conversion.
Jonathan Person then tied the game again with an outside try. The conversion failed and time expired with the score 17-17.
The Tigers' offense featured Zachary Hanslick gaining large amounts of yardage, and on defense Fly Half
James Gilbert led the team in tackles and
Bryson Smith led the team from the back with his try-saving tackles from the Fullback position.
The Tigers will play their home opener on the Ellis Rugby Pitch on Saturday, September 24th at 1:00 pm.
