Hampden-Sydney, VA – The Hampden-Sydney College men's soccer team travels to Salem, VA, as the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (
ODAC) semifinal pits the #8 seed Tigers against the #4 seed Roanoke College. Roanoke defeated the fifth seeded Bridgewater College 1-0 to reach the semifinal while H-SC defeated top seeded Lynchburg 1-0. This is the first postseason matchup between the two sides in 12 years.
The last postseason meeting happened in the
ODAC quarterfinals in 2010 and ended in a penalty victory for H-SC after staying scoreless 110 minutes.
The last matchup between the Tigers and the Maroons took place on October 5, 2022 at
Hellmuth-Gibson Field in Hampden-Sydney, VA and ended 1-0 in favor of the Maroons. All time the Tigers have a 12-25-6 record against Roanoke.
This season both sides have similar records with Roanoke boasting a 9-6-2 record while H-SC is 9-6-3 overall.
Freshman
Zakky Johnston (Meherrin) will be the main threat in front of goal as he leads the Tigers in goals with six and scored the winning goal in the quarterfinal matchup with Lynchburg.
Junior
Declan Shaw (Durham, NC) will also be a key piece of the offensive attack as he is second on the team in goals and assists with four and three respectively.
Senior
Michael Ogenyi (Virginia Beach), junior
John Alexander (Wake Forest, NC) and freshman
Pierce Boerner (Midlothian) will all be major contributors on offense as well.
Ogenyi and Alexander each have scored three goals with
Ogenyi assisting on two goals while Alexander has one assist.
Boerner has two goals and has three assists from his position on the front line.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Wills Huddleston (Baldwin, MD) should handle to goalkeeping duties for the semifinal. He has three shutouts in six games, and has only allowed three goals while making 17 saves.
The
ODAC Men's Soccer Tournament semifinal will be played at 7 p.m. at Donald J. Kerr Stadium in Roanoke, VA on Wednesday, November 2. Tickets will be required for entry, the can be purchased online
