HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Sophomore
Paul Dumitru (Warrenton) scored a goal and added an assist, while sophomore
Ubaid Wasi (Meherrin) and freshman
Graham Campbell (Virginia Beach) each scored to give Hampden-Sydney College a 3-1 win over Eastern Mennonite University to close out Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) action on Wednesday night at Hellmuth-Gibson Field.
The Tigers jumped out to a lead just after the 18-minute mark, when the ball was played off the head of the Royals' defender and into the path of Wasi; he was then able to get to the left corner of the box, cut back onto his right before firing it into the bottom right corner to grab the lead. H-SC doubled its advantage just under 10 minutes later, when freshman
Jeremiah Bennett (Taylorsville, NC) found Dimitru, whose shot took a wicked deflection off a defender and found its way inside the left post for his first career goal. Dimitru went from scorer to assister to give the Tigers a third goal in the 40th minute; on the right edge of the box, he played a short pass to the edge of the box for Campbell, and he passed the ball into the bottom left corner for his first career goal.
The second half saw the Royals claw one back, as in the 66th minute, they hit the Tigers on the counterattack to cut the lead to two. H-SC shut it down from there, only allowing one more shot in the final 24:30, to secure a 3-1 win.
The Tigers held the edge offensively on the night, leading in shots (16-11) and shots on target (6-3).
Sophomore
Stig Larson (Richmond) earned his eighth win in net of the season, making one save.
The Tigers will await their seeding for the ODAC Men's Soccer Tournament. Stay tuned to our website for updates on location, time, and opponent for Saturday's quarterfinal game.
