Box Score FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The Hampden-Sydney College tennis team competed in the 2021 ITA Regional on October 1-2 at the University of Mary Washington. The Tigers picked up a number of wins in singles and doubles against some of the top teams in the region.
"I think this is the best performance at ITAs for us since I've been the coach," said fourth-year head coach
Byron Balkin. "Lots to work on but great to see our guys battle against regions best players and believing in their abilities."
Senior
Tyler Brice (Rocky Mount, NC) made the final of his B7 bracket with a pair of wins including a 6-4, 7-5 win over a player from Dickinson College in the semifinals. Brice fell in the bracket final 6-3, 6-3 to Justin Schuetz of Lebanon Valley.
In the championship doubles bracket, Brice and freshman
Barrett Foster (Virginia Beach) won their round of 64 match against a team from Averett, 8-6, after getting a late break of serve. The duo dropped their round of 32 match against the number two seed from Carnegie Mellon University, 8-2.
In the B2 doubles bracket, two different Tiger doubles teams competed, all comprised of freshmen.
Henry Singleton (Richmond) and
Taylor Fox (Virginia Beach) shut-out their opponents from Randolph College, 8-0 in the first round but fell to a pair from Bridgewater College after nearly coming back from a 5-2 deficit.
Matt Kendrick (Birmingham, AL) and
Frank Borden (Durham, NC) won their first round match against Bridgewater, 8-4 but dropped their next round to a team from Grove City College, 8-3.
H-SC will complete the fall portion of their schedule on Oct. 8-9 when they travel to Belmont Abbey College. The two-day tournament hosted by the Crusaders will take place at the Reidy Tennis Center.
"I am looking forward to competing in Charlotte this coming weekend at Belmont Abbey, first time for us playing at this tournament and will be a great opportunity against scholarship players," said Balkin.
