10/11/2021 12:49:00 PM

Box Score BELMONT, NC – The Hampden-Sydney College tennis team wrapped up the fall portion of its schedule on October 8-9 competing at the Belmont Abbey Invitational in North Carolina. The event featured a pair of NCAA Division II opponents in Johnson C. Smith University and the host Crusaders, along with Division III nationally-ranked No. 39 North Carolina Wesleyan College. Due to weather in the area, all doubles matches were played on Oct. 8 with singles matches taking place on Oct. 9.

"I am proud of the team for their performances this past weekend down in Belmont," said fourth-year head coach Byron Balkin. "We were able to get 12 players matches over two days which was a great way finish up our non-traditional five-week fall season. The tennis was exciting and our guys found ways to compete with some really good programs."

In singles, seven Tigers picked up wins. Four freshmen, Charles Adams (Mechanicsville), Nick Beaudoin (Norfolk), Matt Kendrick (Birmingham, AL), and Henry Singleton (Richmond) each earned a pair of wins. Also winning in singles were junior Patrick Conde (Virginia Beach) and freshmen Taylor Fox (Virginia Beach) and Frank Borden (Durham, NC).

Senior Tyler Brice (Rocky Mount, NC) and freshman Barrett Foster (Virginia Beach) led H-SC in doubles wins on the weekend, going 3-1 as a doubles team. The team of Adams and Beaudoin split their four matches, while freshmen John Kendrick (Birmingham, AL) and Pierce Gemborys (Wilmington, NC) earned a win in their first doubles match together.

"We are anticipating a competitive spring schedule with our conference and non-conference matches, spring break trip, and we will be honored to represent Hampden-Sydney College throughout," said Balkin.

H-SC will resume action on the court when it travels to Division I Longwood University on Thursday, February 17, 2022.
