Hampden-Sydney Tennis Picks Up First Win With 7-2 Victory Over St. Scholastica

ORLANDO, Fla. – The Hampden-Sydney College tennis team picked up its first win of the season with a 7-2 win over St. Scholastica to wrap up day of the annual spring break trip in Florida. The Tigers (1-4) swept the doubles matches en route to the victory over the Saints (2-6). The match was played on the clay courts at the USTA National Campus.

Seniors Matthew Moody/Raleigh, N.C. and Michael Moody/Raleigh, N.C. picked up an 8-1 win over the Saints at the top doubles spot. Classmates Clark Cummings/Norfolk and Grayson Burns/Waynesboroearned an identical 8-1 win over St. Scholastica at number two doubles.Junior Andrew Donelson/McLean and senior Zander Theoharis/Vero Beach, Fla. completed the doubles sweep with an 8-6 win at number three. 

In singles, Matthew Moody won his first set 6-2 before being taken to a tiebreak in the second set, prevailing 7-6 (1). His twin brother, Michael Moody, earned the 6-2, 6-2 win at number two. Cummings and Burns each won in straight sets over the Saints. Cummings picked up the 6-2, 6-3 win at number three singles while Burns won 6-1, 6-4 at number four.  Burns and Donelson dropped their matches at number five and six singles, respectively.

The Tigers will return to action on Tuesday, March 10 when they face both Carthage and Dickinson.
