ORLANDO, Fla. – The Hampden-Sydney College tennis team wrapped up its annual Spring Break trip to Florida with a 9-0 shutout over Wabash Thursday evening from the USTA National Campus in Orlando. The Tigers (3-6) won in straight sets in singles and gave up only four games total in doubles.
Seniors Matthew Moody/Raleigh, N.C. and Michael Moody/Raleigh, N.C. got things done quickly at the top doubles spot as they won 8-1 over the Little Giants. Classmates Clark Cummings/Norfolk and Grayson Burns/Waynesboro did not take much longer as they earned the 8-3 win at number two doubles. Senior Zander Theoharis/Vero Beach, Fla. and freshman Chuck Roberson/Rocky Mount, N.C. completed the sweep with their 8-0 shutout of Wabash at number three doubles.
It was much of the same in singles as the Tigers gave up only five total games among the six matches, including three 6-0, 6-0 matches. Matthew Moody opened up action with his 6-0, 6-2 win at number one doubles while twin brother Michael Moody nearly matched him with a 6-0, 6-1 win at number two. Cummings nearly shutdown his Little Giant opponent with a 6-1, 6-1 win at number three.
Burns started the run of shutouts for the Tigers. Along with junior Andrew Donelson/McLean and Theoharis, the trio each won their match with 6-0, 6-0 victories.
