ORLANDO, Fla. - The Hampden-Sydney tennis team led 2-1 after doubles but fell to Wheaton (Ill.), 5-4 in Orlando during the annual Spring Break trip. The Tigers (2-6) will wrap up their Florida visit when they take on Wabash later on Thursday evening.
In doubles, seniors Clark Cummings/Norfolk and Grayson Burns/Waynesboro breezed through their match at number two, winning 8-1 over The Thunder. At the top doubles spot, classmates Matthew Moody/Raleigh, N.C. and Michael Moody/Raliegh, N.C. picked up their win after the Wheaton number one doubles team was forced to retire with The Thunder leading 2-0. Junior Andrew Donelson/McLean and freshman Patrick Conde/Virginia Beach fell at number three doubles, 8-1.
Wheaton jumped out early in singles, picking up wins at the one, two and four spots. Donelson won his match at number five singles, 7-6 (3), 7-5. However, senior Zander Theoharis/Vero Beach, Fla. dropped his match at number six singles in a super tiebreaker allowing Wheaton to clinch the match. After dropping his first set, 6-1, Cummings bounced back to win the second set, 6-1. He went on to win his super tiebreaker, 13-11, to get to the final score of 5-4.
