DANVILLE, Va. – The Hampden-Sydney College tennis team dropped their match on the road to Averett University, 7-2, Sunday afternoon in Danville. The Cougars (2-0) won two of the three doubles matches and five of the six singles matches against the Tigers (0-3) en route to the win. Senior Grayson Burns/Waynesboro was a winner in both singles and doubles to lead the H-SC on the day.
"Averett played well today," said head coach Byron Balkin. "They showed us what we need to work on before our trip to Florida. Grayson really executed his game plan well and finished strong."
In doubles, the duo of Burns and classmate Clark Cummings/Norfolk got the Tigers on the board with an 8-7 win at number two doubles. They won the tiebreaker 7-4. Seniors Matthew Moody/Raleigh, N.C. and Michael Moody/Raleigh, N.C. dropped their match at number one doubles, 8-5, while senior Zander Theoharis/Vero Beach, Fla. and junior Andrew Donelson/McLean fell at number three doubles, 8-2.
Burns earned his singles victory at number four with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Simon Levinsson. Matthew Moody fell at the top singles spot, 6-3, 6-1, while his brother Michael Moody fell 6-2, 5-7, 1-0 (4) at number two singles. Cummings fell in his match at number three singles 6-2, 6-0, with Donelson dropping his match 6-1, 6-1, at number five. Theoharis rounded out the singles matches, falling 6-0, 6-1 at number six.
Before the Tigers return to the court against Case Western in Orlando, Fla. on Sunday, March 8 during their Spring Break Trip, they will host an Alumni Event at the Westwood Club in Richmond on Saturday, February 29 at 3 p.m.
"We are looking forward to hosting our alumni event this coming weekend," said Balkin.
