Hampden-Sydney Tennis Drops Home Opener To Belmont Abbey, 7-2.

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. – Seniors Grayson Burns/Waynesboro and Clark Cummings/Norfolk picked up a win in doubles as the Hampden-Sydney College tennis team opened the home portion of their 2020 season on Saturday, falling to Belmont Abbey, 7-2. Burns and Cummings picked up an easy 8-1 win over the Crusaders at number two doubles, 8-1.

Belmont Abbey earned the doubles point, however, with wins at number one and three doubles. Seniors Matthew Moody/Raleigh, N.C. and Michael Moody/Raliegh, N.C. dropped their top doubles match 8-3. Senior Zander Theoharis/Vero Beach, Fla. and junior Andrew Donelson/McLean fell 8-4 at number three doubles.

In singles, Donelson won his match at number five singles, 6-3, 6-1. Matthew Moody fell 6-2, 6-3 at the number one while his brother Michael Moody fell 6-1, 6-4 at number two singles. Cummings dropped his match at number three singles, 6-3, 6-1. Burns fell 6-3, 6-3 at number four singles as Theoharis fell 6-0, 6-0 at number six singles.

The Tigers (0-2) returns to the courts on Sunday, February 23 when they travel to Averett for a 3 p.m. match in Danville.
