Hampden-Sydney Basketball Wins Second-Straight, First ODAC Win, Past Visiting Shenandoah 78-73

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Freshman Ryan Clements/Conyers, Ga. scored a game-high and career-high 19 points to lead Hampden-Sydney College to 78-73 come-from-behind Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) basketball home win past Shenandoah University on Saturday afternoon at S. Douglas Fleet Gymnasium. Sophomore Jack Wyatt/Richmond and junior captain Jake Hahn/Ruckersville each posted double-doubles for the Tigers (3-5, 1-1) with 17 points and a game-high 14 rebounds, and 15 points and 13 rebounds, respectively. Christopher Chaney had a double-double for the Hornets (3-4, 1-1), as well, with 19 points and 10 rebounds.

"It was a great team win," said first-year head coach Caleb Kimbrough. "I was very proud of the way we battled and rebounded the ball."

H-SC fell behind early as SU scored the first seven points of the contest; however, the Tigers battled back with a 16-7 run to lead 16-14 at 10:24 after two free throws from sophomore Tyler Thomas/Farmville, who came off the bench and provided a spark with a three-point field goal, as well. Senior captain Kevin Quinn/Apex, N.C. also entered the game from the bench and scored five quick points, including a three-pointer. The Hornets answered with a 16-4 run to lead 30-20 at 4:20, but the hosts battled back again and were within 30-27 at 2:30 following five quick points from Hahn, including a three-pointer. The visitors, though, led 35-29 at the intermission.

SU extended its advantage to 42-31 early in the second half with 17:33 remaining, and the Hornets still led 52-45 at 12:07. H-SC responded with a 15-4 run to go ahead for good at 60-56 with 7:43 on the clock, getting six points inside from Hahn and another three-pointer from Thomas, before Quinn closed the outburst with consecutive three-pointers. SU was within 60-59 at 7:24, but the Tigers finished strong, extending the lead to 74-66 at 1:56, while getting eight late points from Clements. The hosts outscored the visitors 49-38 during the second half toward the program's second-straight win.

Clements led H-SC with his game-high and career-high 19 points, including 14 second-half points, adding five rebounds and four assists. Wyatt finished with his third double-double this season with 17 points and a game-high and career-high 14 rebounds for the Tigers, while Hahn added his fourth double-double this season with 15 points and a career-high 13 rebounds, adding game-highs of five assists and three steals, as well, the latter also a career-high. Quinn had 16 points, including 3-6 three-pointers, adding five rebounds, while Thomas contributed a career-high 10 points. H-SC shot 48% (31-65) from the field, including 62% (21-34) in the second half, 37% (7-19) on three-pointers, and 45% (9-20) at the free throw line. The Tigers enjoyed a 44-24 advantage in points scored in the paint.

Chaney led SU with his double-double of a game-high 19 points, adding 10 rebounds. Alan Dabney and Zach Garrett each finished with 12 points for the Hornets, with Dabney adding nine rebounds, as well. SU shot 38% (24-64) from the field, including 30% (9-30) on three-pointers, and 70% (16-23) at the line.

It was the first of five consecutive home contests for H-SC as the Tigers will welcome Southern Virginia University for a non-conference game on Saturday, December 14, at 5 p.m. in Fleet Gym.
