Hampden-Sydney Basketball Wins Third-Straight Game, Defeats Visiting Southern Virginia 81-67

VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Junior captain Jake Hahn/Ruckersville posted game-highs and career-highs of 23 points and 13 rebounds to lead Hampden-Sydney College to an 81-67 non-conference basketball home win past Southern Virginia University on Saturday evening at S. Douglas Fleet Gymnasium. Sophomore Jack Wyatt/Richmond also scored a game-high 23 points for the Tigers (4-5), who won their third consecutive game while already equaling their season win-total from a year ago. Jamier Cross scored 15 points for the visiting Knights (1-11).

"Slow start today but I thought the guys really settled in the second half and made the adjustments needed to get it done," said first-year head coach Caleb Kimbrough. "Always nice to go into the Christmas break on the winning side of things."

SVU jumped out to an early 14-8 lead at 13:59, getting five quick points from Cross, and the Knights took their largest advantage at 24-16 with 8:50 left in the opening half. H-SC, however, got things rolling and outscored the visitors 20-8 over the final eight-plus minutes to lead 36-32 at the intermission. Hahn sparked the outburst with 10 points, including a conventional three-point play down low that he promptly followed with a three-point field goal, while freshman Ryan Clements/Conyers, Ga. scored the final five points of the half, including his own three-pointer.

The Tigers extended their lead to 45-37 at 17:05 of the second half, as Wyatt scored six-straight points and Hahn connected on another three-pointer. The hosts led 49-40 with 14:34 remaining after a layup by senior Chaise Johnson/Richmond, but SVU rallied back to within 54-51 at 10:28 following a layup from Cross. H-SC, however, responded with a 16-4 run—getting points from six different players—to lead 70-55 with 5:10 left to play and the outcome was not in doubt. Wyatt (4), Hahn (3), Johnson (2) and freshman Chase Turner/Virginia Beach (2) closed the scoring for the hosts over the final 4:30.

Hahn led H-SC with his game-highs and career-highs of 23 points and 13 rebounds for his fifth double-double, adding five assists. Wyatt finished with his game-high 23 points, as well, adding four rebounds for the Tigers. Clements had 13 points, adding game-highs and career-highs of seven assists and three steals, while Johnson contributed 10 points off the bench in his first action since November 20. Turner had career-highs of six points and nine rebounds. H-SC shot a season-best 57% (31-54) from the field, including 33% (6-18) on three-pointers, and 77% (13-17) at the free throw line. The Tigers enjoyed a 50-24 advantage in points scored in the paint.

Cross led SVU with his 15 points. Sam Armstrong and Calvin Seamons each finished with 11 points for the Knights. SVU shot 41% (26-63) from the field, including 32% (10-31) on three-pointers, and 31% (5-16) at the line.

H-SC remains at home to host the Hampden-Sydney Holiday Classic on December 29-30 in Fleet Gym. The Tigers will play Hood (Md.) on Sunday, Dec. 29, at 2 p.m., before playing Sewanee (Tenn.) on Monday, Dec. 30, at 2 p.m. Fellow ODAC member Ferrum will also participate in the event and will face Sewanee on Dec. 29 at 4 p.m., and Hood on Dec. 30 at 4 p.m.
