Soccer Wins Third Straight, Beats Guilford 2-1

Box Score

Hampden-Sydney Soccer scored in the 88th minute to take down Guilford College 2-1 on Saturday night.

THE BASICS

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • It was an evenly contested contest in the first half with each team seeing a few quality scoring chances
  • H-SC nearly got the opening goal in the 15th minute, but Jacob Mann's shot was saved off the goal line by a Quaker defender
  • Guilford would go on to score the first goal when an A.J. Hawkins free kick snuck inside the right post at 42:21
  • H-SC need just 5:30 of time in the second half to get the game-tying tally when Mann found Spell Carr
  • Just 34 seconds later, Guilford's Omar Solis was issued a red card, leaving Guilford one-man down for the remainder of the contest
  • H-SC controlled the game the rest of the way but couldn't find a way to put away any of their scoring opportunities as the Quaker goalkeeper made numerous outstanding saves and plays in the box to gain possession
  • However, the Tigers kept the pressure on and eventually struck at 87:26 when passes from Mann and Carr found their way to Cole Burton who put the ball in the back of the net to win the game

COACH DINUZZO'S COMMENTS
