Big First Half Propels Basketball to Win Over Bridgewater

Hampden-Sydney Basketball used a 45-point first half to down the Bridgewater College Eagles 71-57 on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Hampden-Sydney was on fire in the first half. After just 10 minutes of play, the Tigers already put 30 on the scoreboard, and a strong defensive effort saw the Eagles manage just 13.
  • H-SC would lead by at least 14 the rest of the half and back-to-back baskets from Logan Samuels and JaVonte Reddick to end the half provided the Tigers a 21-point cushion, 45-24, going into halftime
  • Intermission and an increased defensive intensity from the Eagles helped cool off the Tigers, allowing the Eagles cut their deficit down to just 14, 45-31, six minutes in, but H-SC would score five straight to go up 19.
  • A 9-2 Bridgewater run trimmed the deficit down to 12, 52-40, at 10:25, but Jake Duncan would connect on a three pointer on the next possession to push the lead back to 15.
  • The Tigers would lead by at least 14 the rest of the game.

TIGER TOP PERFORMERS

  • Jake Duncan and Logan Samuels tied for the game-high in scoring with 16. Duncan made 5-11 field goals with three triples while Samuels was 7-12 from the floor
  • Kevin Quinn had his best game yet in a Tiger uniform, contributed 12 points with seven rebounds
  • JaVonte Reddick chipped in with 13 points and two blocks
  • Guilherme Guimaraes reeled in a game-high 10 boards to go with six points 

FOR THE FOES

  • Efe Balfour paced Bridgewater with 12 points and eight rebounds
  • Zach Kopp totaled seven points and eight caroms
  • Kenneth Turner added 11 points
  • Kevin Saylor checked in with nine points and four assists

STATS OF THE GAME

  • Hampden-Sydney dominated on the glass, outrebounding the Eagles 43-32 while reeling in 19 offensive rebounds for 19 second chance points
  • The Tigers outscored the Eagles 30-18 in points in the paint
  • H-SC turned over the ball just five times while BC gave it away on 12 possessions
  • Hampden-Sydney shot 40% for the game with eight made three points while Bridgewater made just 33% of their field goal attempts with seven makes beyond the arc
