Basketball Holds Off Late Shenandoah Rally, Wins 75-64

Shenandoah nearly came all the way back from a 15-point deficit at halftime, but the Tigers turned back the Hornets in a 75-64 in the ODAC Tournament First Round. H-SC advances to the quarterfinals to play top-seeded Guilford on Thursday at 1 pm in Salem, VA.

THE BASICS

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • JaVonte Reddick was feeling it for the Tigers in the first half and scored seven of his team's first eight points and 16 total in the opening frame
  • The game remained within a one-possession score through the first 11+ minutes as H-SC led 19-18 at 8:53, but the Tigers used a 10-1 run over the next 3 minutes to jump ahead 29-19 at 5:25.
  • Shenandoah ended their dry spell with a couple layups over the next two minutes, but the Tigers countered each one with a tree pointer.
  • H-SC would go on to lead by 15 at the half, 41-26
  • The Hornets came out of the break on a 16-6 run to find themselves down just five, 47-42, at 14:35 to force a Tigers timeout
  • The timeout proved beneficial as Hampden-Sydney scored the next seven to go back ahead by 12, 54-42, with 12:29 remaining
  • With H-SC leading 65-57 at 3:55, SU's Malcolm Clark went on a personal 6-0 run to draw Shenandoah within two with 2:05 left to play
  • Jake Duncan stepped up for H-SC with a running jumper on the right baseline just before the shot clock buzzer, then Justin Reid forced a turnover at 1:05.
  • Shenandoah proceeded to foul the rest of the way on defense as Duncan, Reddick, and Reid went 8-for-9 on the foul line in the last 65 seconds 

TIGER TOP PERFORMERS

  • JaVonte Reddick notched team-highs of 20 points and seven rebounds to go with two steals. He shot 6-13 from the floor and 4-9 from three
  • Jake Duncan contributed 14 points, six rebounds, and six assists
  • Malik Crute tallied seven points, eight assists, and three steals
  • Guilherme Guimaraes added 13 points
  • Justin Reid posted 10 points, five rebounds, and two steals

FOR THE FOES

  • Malcolm Clark led all players with 26 points and added four rebounds and two blocks
  • Kwa McDonald scored 18 points with three thefts
  • Jonah Meredith made all four of his en route to 11 points

STATS OF THE GAME

  • H-SC shot 49% compared to a 40% mark for SU
  • The Tigers made six three pointers on the night compared to nine for the Hornets
  • Hampden-Sydney was +5 on the foul line with 17 makes
  • H-SC was +11 on the glass with 37 rebounds and handed out 20 assists
  • Each team struggled with turnovers with 34 combined but made their opponent pay for their mistakes with a combined 38 points off turnovers
