Shenandoah Snaps Basketball's Win Streak 69-64

Hampden-Sydney saw their three-game win streak snapped on the road as the Shenandoah University Hornets won 69-64.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Shenandoah opened the game hot, making their first four shots of the game to go ahead 9-3.
  • The Tigers battled back to trail by two on several occasions, but after trailing 13-11 at 12:48 the Hornets began pulling away and took a 30-20 advantage at 7:11
  • The Tigers called a timeout and cut the lead down to five just two possessions later and kept it within five going into halftime at 34-29
  • Still trailing five with five minutes played in the second half, Guilherme Guimaraes and Chaise Johnson scored six straight to give the Tigers their first lead of the game at 45-44 with 12:30 to play
  • After SU's Derrick Perry and H-SC's Hunter Kuehn traded two-point baskets, Kwa McDonald connected on a three pointer at 9:28 to give Shenandoah a 49-47 lead and it spurred an 11-2 run that put Hornets ahead by eight with 6:15 to play
  • Shenandoah led by eight, 67-59, with 20 seconds remaining, but Malik Crute connected on a three pointer with nine ticks on the clock.
  • Crute stole the ball and finished  a layup with one second to play to make it a three-point contest at 67-64, but the Tigers committed a foul before the ball was inbounded, resulting in an automatic two-shot technical foul that sealed the game for the Hornets

TIGER TOP PERFORMERS

  • Hunter Kuehn notched a team-high 12 points and eight rebounds as he shot 6-8 from the floor
  • Logan Samuels scored 10 points with three boards and four assists
  • Malik Crute added 10 points, three caroms, and two steals

FOR THE FOES

  • Malcolm Clark double-doubled with 20 points, 12 rebounds, and three assists
  • Kwa McDonald posted 20 points, three assists, three steals, and two blocks
  • Derrick Perry tacked on 11 points and five boards

STATS OF THE GAME

  • H-SC shot 44.6% overall compared to a 46.9% mark for the Hornets while both teams made nine three pointers. However, Shenandoah had a decisive advantage at the free throw line, shooting 14-23 compared to 5-12 for the Tigers
  • The Tigers outrebounded the Hornets 36-32 while allowing just six offensive rebounds and three second chance points. Meanwhile, H-SC turned nine offensive rebounds into 11 second chance points
  • Despite both teams having 13 turnovers, SU outscored H-SC 15-6 in points off turnovers
