Soccer Wins Fifth Straight, Defeats Sewanee 1-0

Box Score

Hampden-Sydney Soccer improved to 5-0 on the season with a 1-0 win over Sewanee in the annual Tiger/WildCat Classic. This is H-SC's first 5-0 start in school history. Randolph, the co-host of the Classic, beat Birmingham Southern earlier in the day for a 2-0 win.

THE BASICS

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • It was a back and forth contest between two Tiger squads featuring statistically one of the best scoring teams in the nation in Sewanee and one of the best defensive units in Hampden-Sydney. While Sewanee got the better of the Tigers in the shot column, many were far off cage or easily saved
  • In the 36th minute, William Jackson got loose and saw his shot hit off the inside of the left post, bounce off the bottom of the crossbar, bounce on the ground, then cleared off the line by a Sewanee defenseman
  • Several other possessions for both teams displayed promising buildup, but neither team was able to score in the first half and the game continued much the same throughout the first 25 minutes of the second half
  • H-SC got what proved to be the winning score in the 72nd minute when Michael Bell cross from the left connected with Ryan Turner for a diving header goal.
  • The defense limited Sewanee to just one shot on goal from there to preserve the shutout

TIGER TOP PERFORMERS

  • Cameron McFarlane posted six saves for his fourth shutout of the year
  • Turner and Jackson each had two shots with Turner scoring once
  • Bell posted his first collegiate point on an assist

FOR THE FOES

  • Will Merriman made two saves and four student-athletes recorded two shots
