Tigers and Royals Battle to Rain Soaked Double Overtime Tie

Box Score

Hurricane Matthew wreaked havoc on the soccer pitch as Hampden-Sydney and Eastern Mennonite battled to a scoreless, double overtime draw.

THE BASICS

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • A rain-soaked field slowed down the game and limited most possessions to a battle in the midfield, and the majority of shots were forced to come from far outside.
  • The Tigers were the aggressor in the first half, outshooting the Royals 7-2.
  • The lone shot on goal in the opening half saw Landon Moss's strike cleared off the line as it appeared to be slowly trickling in, only slowed down by the rainwater.
  • The second half proved to be a bit more evenly contested with Eastern Mennonite taking a 6-5 advantage in shots, but they mustered just one shot on goal while the Tigers had two, none of which proved much threat of producing a goal.
  • H-SC opened the first overtime with a shot on goal from Matt Sheffield, but the only other shot came late in the 10-minute period when the ball found EMU's Dave Drafton wide open on the left and near the top of the box, but he sent his shot high and wide to the left.
  • Only one promising scoring opportunity came in the final overtime period when Hunter Weiland had a shot near the top of the box but it didn't bend quite enough and narrowly went over the top right corner.

TIGER TOP PERFORMERS

  • The defense limited Eastern Mennonite to only one shot on goal.
  • Robert Kerby recorded four shots with two coming on target.
  • Hunter Weiland shot three times.

FOR THE FOES

  • Matthew Overacker made three saves.
  • Parker Leap posted three shots, one on goal.

STATS OF THE GAME

  • H-SC outshot EMU 15-10 with a 4-1 advantage in shots on target.
