Soccer Suffers Heartbreaking 2-1 Defeat Against Virginia Wesleyan

Box Score

A Tanner Martin penalty kick in the 87th minute handed the Hampden-Sydney Soccer team a 2-1 loss against the Virginia Wesleyan College Marlins.

THE BASICS

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Tigers had four consecutive shots in front of the goal either blocked or save within a span of 15 seconds in the 10th minute
  • Both teams saw several potential scoring chances in the first half but strong goalkeeper play and timely blocks or deflections by defenders kept both teams off the scoreboard in the opening half
  • Tanner Martin put the Marlins ahead 1-0 at 55:08 when his attempt to chip the ball over an outstretched goalkeeper ended up hitting the goalkeeper's arm and bounce over him and rolled into the net
  • The Tigers evened up the score just over a minute later when a Spell Carr cross found Jacob Mann towards the right of the box and he took one dribble and fired it into the left post, far out of reach of the VWC goalkeeper
  • Defenses took over from there and prevented both squads from getting any promising scoring chances and the game had the feel of an overtime finish
  • However, a controversial foul on Hampden-Sydney in the box resulted in a Tanner Martin penalty kick goal at 86:13
  • H-SC was able to fire off two more shots but saw both blocked
