HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA – Hampden-Sydney Basketball won the Blue Jay Invitational Sunday afternoon, defeating host Johns Hopkins University 75-70 in overtime. Mike Murray (Norfolk, VA / Norfolk Christian) was named Tournament MVP while Andrew Evans (Raleigh, NC / Millbrook) was named to the All-Tournament team

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The game was back and forth with nine ties and eight lead changes
  • H-SC led 31-28 at halftime and opened up the second half with a 39-32 advantage two minutes in, but JHU scored seven straight to tie the game at 15:47.
  • The Tigers led 56-54 at the 7:20 mark and extended it to 61-54 with 2:45 to play in regulation.
  • Kyle Doran connected on a three pointer 15 seconds later, and two Ryan Curran free throws made it a two-point game with 1:52 left
  • Evans made it a four-point game with two freebies at 1:43, and Sam Gordon cut the deficit back to two with 1:24 on the clock
  • Gene Williams went to the foul line for a one-and-one with 32 seconds to play but missed the front end, but the Tigers were whistled for a questionable traveling call at the 18-second mark
  • Doran tied the game with three seconds left, and Murray's 1/3 court three-pointer at the buzzer beater banked off the backboard to sent the game to overtime
  • The Blue Jays drew first blood in overtime on a free throw, but then Josh Katowitz (Raleigh, NC / Heritage) delivered a lob pas to Guilherme Guimaraes (Ribeirão Preto, Brazil / Miller School) who finished the one-handed dunk over a Hopkins defender
  • An Evans steal resulted in a run out that was nearly another Guimaraes dunk, but he was fouled and made one of two free throws to put H-SC up 66-64 at 4:20
  • Following two Evans free throws, H-SC led 68-64 at 2:41, but JHU tied the game at 70-70 with 61 seconds remaining
  • The Tiger defense held JHU to just one field goal attempt the rest of the way as Evans and Guimaraes combined to go 5-for-6 on free throws in the final 37 seconds.

TIGER TOP PERFORMERS

  • Evans led the Tigers in scoring with 15 points along with four rebounds. He shot 3-5 overall, 3-3 from three, and 6-6 on free throws
  • JaVonte Reddick (Richmond, VA / L.C. Bird) posted 13 points and he went 3-4 from three range
  • Guimaraes contributed 11 points and four boards
  • Katowitz tacked on four points, eight caroms, three assists, and three blocks
  • Murray totaled seven points, seven rebounds, eight assists, and two steals
  • Mitch Owens (Williamsburg, VA / Walsingham) put up eight points and seven boards

FOR THE FOES

  • Williams scored 25 points, but was held scoreless the last 16 minutes of the contest
  • Doran scored nine points and grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds
  • Curran came off the bench to post 13 points and eight caroms
  • Gordon tallied eight points and nine rebounds

STATS OF THE GAME

  • H-SC held another opponent to under 40% shooting, limiting the Blue Jays to a 36.4% performance
  • The Tiger reserves came up big, posting 32 points off the bench
