H-SC Hoops Ends #20 Roanoke's 12-Game Win Streak

Box Score

SALEM, VA – Hampden-Sydney Basketball knocked off #20 Roanoke College 100-92, halting the Maroon's 12-game winning streak.

THE BASICS

  • Final Score: Hampden-Sydney 100, #20 Roanoke 92
  • Records: H-SC 11-3, 3-2 ODAC; Roanoke 12-2, 4-1 ODAC
  • Location: Salem, VA – Bast Center

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • In a game featuring 180 combined possessions, 12 ties, and 10 lead changes, the shot clock rarely got below 10 seconds and neither team was able to grab a lead of over three possessions until the final minute
  • Neither team led by greater than five points in the entire first half, but a Guilherme Guimaraes (Ribeirão Preto, Brazil / Miller School) jumper at the buzzer gave the Tigers some momentum despite going into intermission trailing 45-42
  • The second half proved to be much the same as the first, but the Tigers grabbed the largest lead of the game up to that point, six, at 70-64 at 10:13
  • The lead and momentum proved to be short lived as the Maroons tied the game at 74-74 with 7:52 to play
  • The Tigers quickly regained a six-point advantage, 82-76, at 6:39 following consecutive three pointers from Mitch Owens (Williamsburg, VA / Walsingham) and Jake Duncan (Williamsburg, VA / Williamsburg Christian).
  • Eli Sumpter cut it down to three, but a lob dunk for Guimaraes helped halt any potential momentum for Roanoke as it kick started a 6-0 spurt to put the Tigers out in front 88-79 at the 4:35 mark
  • Roanoke answered back with two layups, but Gray Cheers (Supply, NC / West Brunswick) answered back with a cold-blooded three from deep to make it 91-83 with three minutes left
  • Roanoke was never able to cut the deficit to below five the rest of the way as a combo of Andrew Evans (Raleigh, NC / Millbrook) layups in the final minute sealed the win

COACH DEE VICK'S REMARKS

  • "Harrison Kuehn, Jake Hackworth, Nick Chase, Logan Samuels, and Will Hollister did a fantastic job of preparing our team for Roanoke in the last two days in practice. They ran Roanoke's offensive and defensive system to perfection and the preparation was the key to today's win. We stayed alert when they trapped us, and we took the right shots which resulted in 24 assistS. We hope this will be the first of many ODAC road wins this year!"
