Seniors Carry Tigers to 80-66 Win on Senior Day

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA - Prior to the game against Shenandoah, Hampden-Sydney honored its five seniors in Leon Hargrove (Raleigh, NC / Middle Creek)William Scott (Virginia Beach, VA / Norfolk Academy)Greg Lewis (Mechanicsville, VA / Hanover)Alex Smith (Whitsett, NC / T. Wingate Andrews), and Jonathan Wade (Washington DC) and the five of them helped carry the Tigers to an 80-66 win. The victory clinched the Tigers the #6 seed and will host Emory & Henry College on Monday at 7 pm in the first round of the ODAC Tournament. 

The seniors started and gave the Tigers a 5-3 lead through 2:16 of play. H-SC gradually built an eight-point lead, 22-14, following a Hargrove steal and dunk with 7:40 left in the first half. Shenandoah got hot from three after a timeout and used a 15-2 run over the next three plus minutes to go up 29-24 at 4:13. Nick Chase (Wilmington, NC / Coastal Christian) trimmed the deficit down to three when he drained a triple at 1:34, but Eli McEathron nullified it a minute later. A Mike Murray (Norfolk, VA / Norfolk Christian) free throw at eight seconds gave Shenandoah a 37-32 lead going into halftime. 

Hampden-Sydney scored the first nine points of the second half and went on a 15-5 run in the first seven minutes to go up 47-42 at 13:05. Hampden-Sydney never trailed from there and went on to lead by as many as 17 and never led by less than eight after the 10-minute mark. H-SC closed out the game with Wade scoring his first career basket at the buzzer to receive a raucous ovation. 

Hargrove scored a team-high 17 points as he was nearly flawless from the field, shooting 7-for-8 while also posting four assists, three rebounds, and two steals. Smith contributed nine points and four steals, Lewis added on five points, and Scott tacked on two points and five boards. Murray added 13 points while Jake Duncan (Williamsburg, VA / Williamsburg Christiantacked on 11 points, six rebounds, three steals, and two assists.  

Malcolm Clark paced the Hornets with 18 points but recorded nine turnovers, and McEathron posted 17 points and seven steals. Xavier Alston posted 11 points and nine boards, and Aaron Patterson chipped in with 11 points. 

Hampden-Sydney shot 50.9% (29-57) for the game and made 5-of-15 three pointers. Shenandoah made 42% of their field goal attempts and 44% from three but was limited to just 37% and 29% in the second half. H-SC held a 37-31 edge on the glass and forced 24 turnovers while committing 16. H-SC made the Hornets pay for their giveaways, turning them into 32 points.
