H-SC Hangs on for 89-84 Win vs. William Peace

RALEIGH, NC – Hampden-Sydney Basketball held off William Peace in the second half to take an 89-84 non-conference win on the road.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • H-SC led wire-to-wire but the second half provided a lot of drama
  • Hampden-Sydney started out the game on fire, going out in front 14-5 in the first five minutes.
  • The Tigers pushed the lead out to 11, 25-14, after a Jake Duncan (Williamsburg, VA/Williamsburg Christian) three pointer at 8:40
  • The Pacers fought their way back and trailed just 31-28 at 5:42
  • H-SC responded with the next seven points and pushed the lead out to 16 with nine seconds left in the frame following another Duncan triple
  • Sam Johnson drained a thee pointer just before the half ended to make it a 49-36 Tigers lead at the half
  • Both teams opened up the second half on fire, but H-SC maintained a double digit lead at 72-62 with 7:38 remaining.
  • A 10-2 Pacers run over the next 1:38 found them down only two points with six minutes to go
  • Duncan answered with a big shot from deep range and two Andrew Evans (Raleigh, NC/Millbrook) foul shots at 4:17 put H-SC ahead by seven, 79-72
  • A layup for Terry Rogers and a trifecta courtesy of Ryan Emfinger saw the Pacers down two again, 79-77, with 2:21 on the clock
  • Duncan answered the calla gain with a three-point shot to put the advantage back to five, 82-77, with 1:28 left.
  • The Pacers wouldn't go away, and after a Tyquan Nolan three with 40 seconds left, William Peace trailed just 83-82
  • The Tigers closed out the game from the free throw line from there as Mike Murray (Norfolk, VA/Norfolk Christian), JaVonte Reddick (Richmond, VA/L.C. Bird), and Gray Cheers (Supply, NC/West Brunswick) combined to go 6-for-6 at the charity stripe

TIGER TOP PERFORMERS

  • Duncan scored a team-high 22 points as he shot 8-for-9 from the floor and 6-for-7 from three
  • Murray totaled 14 points and four assists
  • Reddick contributed 10 points
  • Evans tacked on five points, a team-high six rebounds, and four assists

FOR THE FOES

  • Chris Thomas filled the stat sheet with 21 points, six boards, five steals, and three assists. He shot 8-for-13
  • Emfinger posted a game-high 24 points, making 9-of-20 shots and 4-for-8 from three range
  • Rogers poured in 12 points and six assists
  •  Nolan scored 16

  • Hampden-Sydney shot 62% overall, 71.4% (10-14) from three, and 17-24 at the foul line
  • William Peace made 46% of their field goal attempts and went 13-33 beyond the arc. They were able to make just nine free throws on 13 shots
