Tigers Down Marymount 1-0, Head Coach Josh Laux Becomes Winningest Coach

Box Score

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA - Thanks to a Liam Hogan (Haymarket, VA / Battlefield) goal in the 86th minute to defeat Marymount 1-0, Soccer Head Coach Josh Laux became the team's all-time winningest coach with 95 victories. The win extends H-SC's undefeated streak at home to nine.

H-SC's offense got several quality possessions and dominated time of possession in the first half but struggled to make the connecting passes in the box to notch any shots on goal, except for a Hogan penalty kick in the sixth minute that was saved. H-SC entered halftime with just four shots, but the defense was stout, allowing just two shots in the first 45 minutes.

The Tiger offense sharpened up after a 15-minute halftime break  and made some impressive passes and individual maneuvers to get some great shots on goal, but Logan Cooper made a few strong saves in the early going to keep the Tigers at bay. Cooper ended up making six saves in the second frame, but the constant offensive pressure finally made a crack in the Marymount defense in the 86th minute. A Costin Gregory (Raleigh, NC / Sanderson) shot on a great look at the goal got blocked and went out of bounds off a Marymount defender at 85:24, leading to a Gregory corner kick at 85:46. The kick was sent just a few feet past the left post where it found Hogan, who headed it in towards the left post, well out of reach of Cooper. Just under three minutes later, Robert Kerby (Hampton, VA / Kecoughtan) nearly made it a 2-0 game when his shot narrowly missed, hitting off the crossbar and out of bounds.

H-SC outshot Marymount 14-4 and held the Saints to zero shots on goal while Cooper finished the game with seven saves. H-SC recorded five corner kicks to just two for MU.

The Tigers return to Hellmuth-Pritzlaff Field on Sunday for a 3 pm game vs. Penn State Abington. Prior to the game, Hampden-Sydney College will have a brief ceremony recognizing Coach Laux's milestone win.
