Box Score
HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA - Washington & Lee scored a goal early in the second half to take a 1-0 win over Hampden-Sydney in a battle of two tough defenses.
The Generals held the Tigers to only one shot in the first half, but the Tigers mounted several quality possessions that resulted in excellent crosses across the center of the goal. Ted Hurst got behind the defense on a forward pass in the 49th minute and was able to put a shot in the bottom right of the net off a one-on-one chance with the goalkeeper.
The Tiger offense started bringing the heat after that. James Lawrence (Midlothian, VA / Midlothian) went narrowly high on a header shot off a crossing pass at 65:30. Robert Kerby (Hampton, VA / Kecoughtan) saw his shot at 76:56 get blocked followed by a header that went just inches over the crossbar in the 82nd minute. Patrick Barry nearly made it a 2-0 game, but his header at 82:15 bounced off the ground and completely over the crossbar. Kerby had another shot saved at 82:39, and a Liam Hogan (Haymarket, VA / Battlefield) header in the 84th minute went barely wide. Costin Gregory (Raleigh, NC / Sanderson) posted the Tigers last shot of the match when his rocket of a shot narrowly missed the goal at 88:19.
H-Sc outshot W&L 9-7, including an 8-2 advantage in the second frame. Albert Civitarese notched three saves. The Tigers drew six corner kicks compared to four for the Generals.
