Soccer Beats Eastern Mennonite 2-0 Behind Turner's Goal and Assist

Box Score

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA - Ryan Turner's (Raleigh, NC/Sanderson) goal and assist propelled Hampden-Sydney Soccer to a 2-0 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) win over visiting Eastern Mennonite University. H-SC improves to 4-3-0 and 1-1 in the ODAC while EMU drops to 2-4-2 and 0-2-0.

Aside from one scare from the Royals that ended up not resulting in a shot, the Tigers dominated the first half and had an overwhelming edge in time of possession. Hampden-Sydney mounted several strong scoring opportunities before finally breaking through in the 36th minute. Robert Kerby (Hampton, VA/Kecoughtan) got out on a breakaway and got past his defender in the box. A help defender came over and stabbed at the ball and looked to have thwarted Kerby, but Kerby got the benefit of the bounce and put it in the back of the empty net. Turner was credited with an assist on the play. H-SC got a few more good looks but did not capitalize to make it a 1-0 game at intermission.

The second half proved to be much of the same with Turner adding a goal of his own in the 89th minute to seal the game and extend H-SC home undefeated streak to 11.

The defense had another impressive outing in the clean sheet victory, allowing just two total shots with none on goal. Andrew Yoder made six saves for the guests while H-SC held a 5-1 advantage on corner kicks.

Hampden-Sydney goes on the road this Wednesday for a 7 pm match vs. the Guilford College Quakers.
