Dominant Second Half Fuels 82-72 Win for H-SC Hoops

Box Score

EMORY, VA - Hampden-Sydney Basketball scored 56 points in the second half on their way to an 82-72 win on the road at Emory & Henry College. The Tigers improve to 5-0, 2-0 in the ODAC while Emory & Henry drops to 0-7, 0-1 in the league. It is H-SC's first 5-0 start since the 2005-06 season.

Both offenses struggled throughout the first half as neither team managed to break the 30-point mark and the Tigers didn't register their first point until 5:07 into the contest. After E&H started out scoring the first nine points, H-SC scored 10 of the next 12 to trail just 11-10 at 11:42. But the Wasps scored the next eight to go back in front by nine, 19-10, with 9:36 to go until halftime. Hampden-Sydney gradually chipped away at the lead but could not cut it down to less than two as they went into intermission trailing 29-26.

Both offenses came out slinging after the break with a combined 99 points scored in the second stanza. Mike Murray (Norfolk, VA / Norfolk Christian) tied the game with a three-pointer from the right wing 1:10 in then consecutive steals led to a layup for Leon Hargrove (Raleigh, NC / Middle Creek) and a couple Murray free throws to put H-SC out in front 33-29 with 18:06 to go.

The lead continued to remain six, 44-38, at 14:35 when E&H caught fire from three to tie the game at 48-48 less than three minutes later. The scoreboard caught a rare break in the second half as neither team scored for nearly three minutes until Jake Duncan (Williamsburg, VA / Williamsburg Christian) put in a jumper at 9:07 to give the Tigers the lead. The shot sparked 9-2 run that saw H-SC go up 57-50 with 6:25 remaining.

However, the Wasps continued to hang around and trailed just 65-60 at 3:52 when Duncan and Hargrove scored the next six points to make it a 71-60 contest with 1:37 to go. The Emory & Henry press paid some dividends as they used Tiger turnovers to trim the lead down to six, 71-65, at 1:05. H-SC turned over the ball for the third time in a row after a Wasp free throw, but the Tigers forced a missed layup, got the rebound, and went to the line for free throws. Each team traded two free throws back-and-forth until Myles Turner committed a turnover at 27 seconds with H-SC up 77-69. A Kevin Anzenber intentional foul on a Guilherme Guimarães (Ribeirão Preto, Brazil / Miller School) layup effectively ended the game as it resulted in a five-point possession for Hampden-Sydney.

Murray finished with game and season-highs of 23 points and nine rebounds. He made 6-of-10 field goal attempts and made all 10 tries at the free throw line. Duncan posted career-highs of 18 points (5-11 FGs, 7-7 FTs) and six boards. Hargrove contributed 10 points, four rebounds, and four steals, and Guimarães notched 12 points and five caroms.

Myles Turner led all Wasps with 21 points as he converted 5-of-12 shots and went 9-for-11 at the foul line. He also added three rebounds and four assists but committed six turnovers. Brandon Self tacked on 13 points, and John Shelor made 4-of-5 three pointers for 12 points off the bench.

Hampden-Sydney shot 48.1% (26-54) and 87.1% (27-31) at the charity stripe. Emory & Henry was 24-56 (42,9%) overall and kept themselves in the game with nine made three pointers, helping make up for a -12 point differential on free throws. H-SC outrebounded E&H 35-24.

The Tigers are off until December 18 when they host the Luck Stone Holiday Tournament. Sewanee plays Keystone at 4 pm followed by the Tigers against Kean a half hour after the first game ends.
