Hoops Gets Defensive in 71-67 Victory Over Roanoke

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA - Hampden-Sydney Basketball limited Roanoke to 38% shooting and held All-ODAC center Daniel Eacho to just eight points in a 71-67 victory in ODAC action.

The score was within one possession throughout nearly the entire first half. With H-SC ahead 32-31 with 1:25 left before intermission, Hunter Kuehn (Raleigh, NC / Sanderson) scored at the 57 second mark, and Roanoke turned over the ball with 44 ticks left. Mitch Owens (Williamsburg, VA / Walsingham) then drained a three-pointer at the 26-second mark, and H-SC secured a defensive stop with a Kuehn rebound in traffic at the buzzer to make it a 37-31 Tigers lead going into halftime.

Roanoke came out on fire to open the second stanza, using a 17-5 run over the first 5:30 to grab a six-point lead, 48-42, at 14:30. Hampden-Sydney woke up from there after the second timeout of the half. The Tigers scored the next 12 points and ended it with a thunderous, two-handed dunk in traffic from Guilherme Guimarães (Ribeirão Preto, Brazil / Miller School ) and a three-pointer from Jake Duncan (Williamsburg, VA / Williamsburg Christian) that put the Tigers back on top 54-48 at 10:41.

John Fitchett broke the drought for Roanoke with two free throws, but that didn't stop Hampden-Sydney as they extended the game-changing run to a 20-4 spurt that was capped off by back-to-back triples from Guimarães and Duncan. The Maroons trimmed the lead down to three, 65-62, at 2:33, but H-SC closed out the game at the free-throw line as Mike Murray (Norfolk, VA / Norfolk Christian) made five-out-of-six over the last 64 seconds.

Duncan posted a team-high 14 points on 5-9 shooting and 3-4 from deep range. He also added four rebounds and two steals. Guimarães contributed 12 points while shooting 5-6 along with five boards. Greg Lewis (Mechanicsville, VA / Hanover) tallied 12 points, and Murray totalled 13 points, four assists, and two steals. Leon Hargrove (Raleigh, NC / Middle Creek) stuffed the stat sheet with seven rebounds, seven assists, and five points, and Owens scored nine points on a 3-3 performance from three range along with four caroms.

Andrew Daniels scored a game-high 17 points for Roanoke while Julian Ramirez contributed 15 points, five rebounds, four assists, and two steals. Eacho faced constant double teams on the low block, leading to him scoring just eight points while missing eight of his 11 field goal attempts.

H-SC shot 53.3% (24-45) from the floor compared to a 38.1% (24-63) performance for RC. The Tigers sizzled from beyond the arc, making 11 of their 19 attempts while Roanoke struggled to an 8-26 mark. The Maroons held a 36-29 advantage on the boards, keyed by 15 offensive rebounds. Each team was relatively turnover free with H-SC giving it up just 10 times compared to eight for Roanoke. Hampden-Sydney's bench proved to be the major difference as they got 42 points from its reserves compared to just 11 for the Roanoke substitutions.

Hampden-Sydney makes the long trek to Emory, VA this Saturday to battle against the Wasps of Emory & Henry College at 4 pm.
