Second Half Goal Gives Soccer 1-0 Win at Averett

Box Score

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA - James Lawrence's (Midlothian, VA/Midlothian) goal in the 51st minute lifted Hampden-Sydney Soccer to a 1-0 win at Averett University on Tuesday. H-SC is now 7-4-1 for the season.

Hampden-Sydney had a few chances in the first half but saw three shots saved and another two blocked while Averett had just two shots to send it into intermission as a scoreless draw. The Tigers kept up the pressure and it paid off when a Ryan Turner (Raleigh, NC/Sanderson) through ball in the box found Lawrence who put it in the back of the net at 50:48. H-SC got several more chances but was not able to score again. Averett upped their intensity on the offensive end to finish with seven shots in the second half, but four saves in the half from Cameron McFarlane (Norwich, CT/South Kent) kept the Cougars off the scoreboard.

H-SC held a 16-9 advantage in shots along with a 6-3 edge in corner kicks. McFarlane finished the game with five saves and Martin Erenstedt posted six.

Hampden-Sydney travels to Roanoke College on Saturday for a 7 pm game.
