Box Score WINCHESTER, VA - An own goal 2:16 into overtime gave Hampden-Sydney soccer a crucial 2-1 win at Shenandoah University on Saturday. With tie on Tuesday vs. Virginia Wesleyan, the Tigers would clinch the #4 seed and a win could give H-SC either the #2 or #3 seed depending upon the result of the Lynchburg vs. Randolph match.
Shenandoah struck just 7:49 into the game off a header from Gerard Talbot-Paul. A Brian Maye header at the 22-minute mark nearly went in but went off the post. From then on it was all Hampden-Sydney as Shenandoah was held to only two shots the rest of the contest while the Tigers dominated time of possession. The Tigers fired off 20 shots in regulation with 12 on goal but Matthew Poell was impressive in net, making several impressive saves en route to 10 on the night.
The relentless offensive attack eventually found a crack in the defense in the second half when a Costin Gregory (Raleigh, NC / Sanderson) service found Davis Carter (Charlotte, NC / Myers Park) who headed it in to tie the game at 1-1 in the 79th minute. H-SC nearly put in the game-winner in the 86th minute, but Poell made a near point-blank save on a Ryan Turner (Raleigh, NC / Sanderson) shot to help force overtime.
In the 98th minute, Alex Strain (Roanoke, VA / North Cross) drove in a dangerous ball that the Tigers challenged hard in the air which led to a Shenandoah defender inadvertently headed it in for an own goal.
H-SC held a 21-4 advantage in shots, including 13-1 on goal. Shenandoah finished with 11 saves, and the Tigers committed just four fouls while the Hornets committed 10.
Hampden-Sydney closes out the regular season at home on Tuesday vs. Virginia Wesleyan at 7 pm.
