HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA–The Blue Devils ventured north to play on the newly named Ellis Rugby Pitch for Homecoming weekend. Although the Tigers played tough defense, Duke demonstrated the skills that brought them a rugby national championship in 2012, scoring a try in the 15th minute. The conversion missed the mark and H-SC lined up to take the kick off. Austin Burke sprinted down field, surprising the Duke forward who was attempting to corral the loose ball. Burke scooped the ball, side-stepped a defender, and scored the try. Greg Regan added two points with his conversion. A battle ensued with both teams' defenses limiting the opposition attack. Finally, a hole appeared in the H-SC defensive line and a fleet Duke wing ran the ball in for a try in the 39th minute, leaving the score at 10-7 going into the half. The Blue Devils rallied in the second half and the H-SC defense was constantly on their back foot. Three tries and three conversions put the final score at 31-7.
