Box Score HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA - Hampden-Sydney Soccer earned a critical three points in the ODAC standings with a 4-2 win over Bridgewater College on Senior Day. Hampden-Sydney moves up to 8-5-1 and 4-3-1 in the ODAC. The Tigers are now in a tie for third place in the ODAC with 13 points heading into Saturday with four ODAC games on the schedule. Bridgewater drops to 5-10 and 4-4 in the conference, sitting in a tie for fifth with 12 points.
The Tigers wasted little time putting up the first goal. Liam Hogan (Haymarket, VA / Battlefield) delivered a through ball between two defenders into the box to Robert Kerby (Hampton, VA / Kecoughtan) who managed to get ahead of the defenders and beat the goalkeeper to the ball for the goal. However, for the majority of the first half there wasn't a whole lot of activity or build up to goal scoring chances, then the last minute came. H-SC earned a corner kick in at 44:02 and Hogan pocketed a header goal off the Leo Kowalski (Curitiba, Brazil / Deep Run) corner kick. Bridgewater scored with just 3.3 seconds left in the frame when a poor defensive clearance led to an Alex Farrington shot from deep that stood no chance of being saved.
Kerby scored what would prove to be the game-winning tally when Hogan delivered a forward ball to Kerby in stride and outran the defenders and won the one on one matchup with the goalkeeper to make it a 3-1 H-SC lead at 66:25. Bridgewater got back into the game in the 71st minute when the Tigers were whistled for a foul in the penalty box, awarding the Eagles with a penalty kick opportunity. Farrington sent it into the right of the net to draw the Eagles within one. Ryan Turner (Raleigh, NC / Sanderson) scored an insurance goal at 88:22 when he headed in a Costin Gregory (Raleigh, NC / Sanderson) service off a free kick.
Kerby finished the game with four points on two goals while Hogan notched four as well courtesy of one score and two assists. H-SC outshot Bridgewater 12-7 and held a slim 4-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Hampden-Sydney travels to arch-rival Randolph-Macon on Tuesday for a 4 pm contest.
