Box Score SALEM, VA - A first-half goal gave Roanoke College a key three points and a 1-0 victory overHampden-Sydney Soccer on Saturday night. H-SC drops down to 7-5-1 and 3-3-1 in the ODAC while Roanoke improves to 9-2-2 and 6-0-1. Roanoke is in first place, ahead by four points, while H-SC is tied in fifth with Guilford but owns the head-to-head tiebreaker with the Quakers.
The Tigers had control of the game through the first 15 minutes, firing off three of the games first four shots with two of their attempts being saved. However, it was Roanoke that got on the board first when Tyler Carbaugh finished off a Robby Lentine pass. The goal put momentum on the Maroons' side as they outshot H-SC 6-0 the rest of the half, but only two were on target as Cameron McFarlane (Norwich, CT/South Kent) stopped both of them. The second half proved to be much the same as the first, but the Tigers prevented the Maroons from tacking on another goal.
McFarlane recorded seven saves while Roanoke netminder Cole Sinclair made three. Roanoke outshout Hampden-Sydney 15-6 with an 8-3 advantage in shots on goal. Roanoke also held a decisive 11-2 edge in corner kicks.
The Tigers return home on Friday night for a 7 pm homecoming contest vs. Bridgewater. Prior to the game, Head Coach Josh Laux will be recognized for winning 100 games and becoming the all-time winningest coach in team history. Also before the game, the seniors will be recognized for their contributions to the team throughout their careers.
